Abstract (EN)
The geotechnical characteristics of Van province and its close environs were investigated for this thesis. The area has been found to consist of high groundwater levels and sand units that are gravelly, silty, and clayey. These sand units are often made up of sediments from lakes and streams that have low energy. It is also known that the area is in a first-degree earthquake zone and that there have been terrible earthquakes in the past few years that have claimed lives and damaged property. In this case, a geotechnical investigation of the area was recommended. The geological and geotechnical investigations benefited from 30 drilling campaigns conducted by a geotechnical company operating in the region. Six of the thirty investigations were thoroughly analyzed; computations for bearing capacity, groundwater level, local soil class in the area, and settlement were done using the data gathered from the laboratory results. In addition, the six regions are as follows: north-south, east-west, and two in the center; these encompass Van and its immediate environs. The remaining 24 studies, four of which are from the same region or one that is closest to it, are only presented as results. Here, the purpose is to create a more trustworthy comparison and set a precedent for the studied areas. The border carrying forces in the six locations under investigation, as well as the safest and least safe regions relative to other regions, were identified within the purview of this study. Presented below are the necessary safety measures for the structures that will be constructed, based on their maximum load carrying capability. It is well known that settlements will develop in sandy soils as a result of the ground strains brought on by seismic activity. To forecast the settlements that will arise from the effects of earthquakes on the soils of the province of Van and surrounding areas, laboratory studies and samples were collected from drilling wells. The settlement values of the studied regions and the required safeguards were specified in accordance with the experiment results. For Van province, which is situated in an earthquake zone of magnitude one, liquefaction poses a serious risk. The investigation led to the determination of the regions' subsurface water levels as well as the identification of hazardous and non-hazardous zones. It is highlighted that building suppliers and local authorities need to be aware of these areas in order to prevent liquefaction in the case of an earthquake, and the appropriate safety measures are provided.
