Effects of vasculer endoteilal growth factor on wound healing and oxidative stress

Abstract (EN)

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) which is a member of Platelet Derived Growth Factor Superfamily has known to have important effects for endothelial cells. VEGF has several roles in the body such as construction of new vessels, wound healing, embryogenesis, and menstrual cycles of frawing. Experiments were performed on 42 female Wistar albino rats (weight: 200-250g). Animals were divided into four group: control group (n=6), untreated group (n=12), chitosan-treated group (n=12) and chitosan+VEGF treated group (n=12). Two full-thickness excisional skin wounds were made under anesthesia in all animals except for control group. In the chitosan+VEGF treated groups, the wounds were treated topically with a single daily dose VEGF (7 ng/ml) after wounding. In the chitosan-treated groups, the wounds were treated topically with equal amount blank chitosan gel. After these administrations, on the 3th and 7th days of wound healing, the animals were sacrificed. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitric oxide (NOx), ascorbic acid (AA), glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured spectrophotometrically in wound tissues. Results were expressed as mean ±standard deviation. Mean differences were compared by Anova variance analysis (p<0.05).Our study showed that chitosan in the treatment of wound healing, has found to be effective on oxidative processes Especially show that in the advanced stages of the healing has been increase to the amount of NOx and MDA. VEGF has known to be a positive contribution to the wound healing, in this study increase to the application dose of the inflammatory and in parallel with observed to the oxidant and antioxidant events have been affected.Key Words : VEGF, wound healing, antioxidant, oxidative stress
