A recommended draft syllabus for first year cello education

This study is based on the topics, goals, target behaviors, learning-teaching situations and evaluation criteria as outlined in the National Board of Education Bulletin No. 2470, published January 27, 1997 and entitled ?Basic Arts Education Syllabus (Cello).? A need analysis of the diverse approaches discovered through discussions held in regard to the subject became the basis of an attempt to reflect them in a new, re-configured draft of the syllabus.Data collected by means of:?a literature survey and?a needs analysis questionnaire distributed among 20 cello faculty members and teachersformed the basis for the qualitative research methods used in the study.All fine arts and sports high schools, post-secondary music education departments and state conservatories in the Aegean Region were included in the population surveyed by the study. Based on the findings of this study, the topics, goals, target behaviors, learning-teaching situations and evaluation criteria for first-year (9th grade) cello lessons at fine arts and sports high schools have been re-organized. It is hoped that this research will be helpful in shedding light on the study of the cello.Furthermore, the draft syllabus shows parallels to the current syllabus - set in effect by the National Department of Education during the process of documenting this study ? and supports it with scientific invention.
