Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACTMaster of Science ThesisTHE PILOT STUDY FOR THE RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF THE THIRD REVISE OFWECHSLER MEMORY SCALE VERBAL PAIRED ASSOCIATION AND AUDITORYRECOGNITION DELAYED SUBTESTSEMİNE SELCEN ANTAnadolu UniversityInstitute of Medical SciencesDepartment of Speech and Language TherapySupervisor: Pınar Ege, Assc. Prof, phD2005This study is apart of the pilot study constructed to gather the data that will be used in theTurkish reliability and validity study of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-III). The aim of thestudy is to gather data for the pilot study on the Verbal Paired Association I - II and AuditoryRecognition Delayed subtests of WMS-III.The first step of this pilot study was to translate the original scale into Turkish. TheTurkish translation of WMS-III was individually administered to 158 adults (80 females, 78males) , from three levels of education. The age range range of the sample was 16-77 years. The data on the Verbal Paired Association I - II and Auditory Recognition Delayedsubtests of WMS-III were analyzed by 3 (age) x 3 (ES) x 2 (sex) analysis of variance. The rankorder correlation technique was used to find out the item difficulty range in the Turkish sample ofthe subtests. The internal consistency of the performance scales was calculated by CronbachAlpha coefficients, and intercorelations were computed. The result of the analysis of variance indicate that the main effect of education wasstatistically significant on the three subtests of the WMS-III, in favour of high education status;there was no main effect of sex and age on any subtest. The Cronbach Alpha coefficients andintercorrelations calculated were very high and significant, indicating that the internal consistencyof the performance test of the Turkish WMS-III is high. The suggestions for the standardization study were discussed in the light of the findingsof this pilot study.Key Words: Memory, Verbal memory, Wechsler Memory Scale, Verbal Paired Association,Auditory Recognition Delayed52
