Ottoman office inns in Eminönü in XIX.century and the begining of XX.century

ABSTRACT In 19th century, Ottoman Empire which was almost bankrupted was like a country that was trying to westernized and in order to do that countless reform trials were tried on it. In this project, especially Ottoman's condition of that period and the factors that prepaired the base for the changing in the modernization and westernization process were examined. The subject of this research clarifies the causes that take place at the formation of first samples of today's office buildings in the Ottoman Empire and the effect of the changes that especially were made at the planning of the Classical Ottoman Commercial Inns and the reason that they were built with traditional system in Eminönü region. In the introduction part, the reason of this research was explained, the resources that directed our study were emphasized and our research method was pointed out. In the second part, we followed the progress of the office buildings at the localities that covers the cathedrals, palaces and finally the houses from the XV. century up to today's first Europian examples and most important office buildings from Europe that would be chosen as models for many office buildings were built in this period. In the third part, answers were tried to be found out the socio-economic problems that lie behind the adaptation of the Europian models as means of modernization and the effect of commercial pacts with the other countries, especially with England and industrial revolution in the period that Ottoman Empire became aware of being backward against the Europian countries. In the fourth part, the inns in Eminönü region that belong to the same period were examined from the point of their plans, structures and settlement characteristics which were supported with photographs, maps and drawings. In the final part, the graphics that were prepeared by the help of the documents that we have make it easily observable and possible to show the state and the difference caused by the years between the inns that were built in the same period with different plannings, characterictics as they were examined from the point of planning order, number of floors and period characteristics.
