Van Province Prison in the late XIX c. and early XX c.

In this study, the Van Province Prison is examined within the context of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With the onset of modernization efforts in penal institutions from the 19th century onward, transformations in the architectural, administrative, and structural systems of prisons are addressed. The study primarily draws upon sources from the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry. It is supported with tables, charts, and visual materials. Documents sent from the provinces to the central administration have been of particular importance in identifying the prisoner profiles of the region. Based on the data obtained, the structure, administration, personnel, number of convicts and detainees, types of crimes, punishments, and public order issues related to the Van Province prison are analyzed.
