COMPARISON OF OIL FILTER BOILERS WITH FINITE ELEMENTS METHOD (Master Thesis) Derya BAHALI ISKENDERUN TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE INSTITUTE May 2019 ABSTRACT Oil filters are important parts in terms of engine life. Especially in high power and speed applications, the oil in the system must be circulated at the required quantity and speed in order to operate the motor efficiently. If the motor cannot be lubricated as required, large faults such as gasket burning, bearing winding, crank cutting can occur. During the operation of the engine, the oil pressure can reach high values due to the clogging of the filter filter elements and the sudden stresses in the motor. Oil filters are subject to lower pressure values under operating conditions. However, when the mentioned conditions occur, the pressure values increase. For this reason, the oil filters are designed above the pressure values under normal operating conditions. If the oil filter does not have sufficient compressive strength, the filter is subject to mechanical damage without completing its filtration life. In the maintenance instructions of the vehicle manufacturer, the replacement periods of the filters are given. When a filter suitable for the engine is used, the oil change and filter change are synchronized. This is generally the case in practice in the market. In addition, parts such as sleeves, rings and covers, which are the sheet elements of the filter, must be suitable for the filter working conditions. For example, the resistance of the sheet metal parts to the working pressure of the filter should be at the desired level. It is necessary to protect the sheet metal parts against corrosion and to make the connection to each other uniform. The aim of this study is to change the sheet thickness of the filter covers and sleeves without changing the design and mold changes, and to reach the optimum working conditions with minimum operating cost and pressure ranges. This is one of the factors that affect the compressive strength of the oil filter is the sleeve and cover sheet thicknesses. In this study, both the finite element analysis was performed for the existing oil filter and the compressive strength and static analysis values of the filter were obtained. The results obtained from the finite element analysis were compared with the experimental results and the accuracy of the analysis was determined. Then, different thicknesses were investigated for the oil filter and the results were evaluated by finite element analysis and the best was chosen. Finally, the pressure and thickness of the oil filter without changing the thickness of the plates with the appropriate pressure and conditions with the minimum cost of pressure resistance was provided.
