Abstract (EN)
With the increase in life expectancy, understanding the aging process and the old age has become increasingly important. This study explores the experience of spousal loss as a potentially significant turning point in the aging process and investigates the social support networks of older adults in the aftermath of loss. The main purpose of the research is to reveal experiences, relations and the factors that shape them in a multidimensional way. The research was conducted using constructivist grounded theory, one of the qualitative research methodologies. The theoretical framework of the study draws on life course, intersectionality, and gender perspectives, along with the cumulative advantage/disadvantage theory and the convoy model. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 14 men aged 60 and over who have experienced spousal loss, using a semi-structured interview guide. After the completion of the data analysis process, two main categories were established: spousal loss experience and social support. These categories encompass various sub-themes that provide a comprehensive and multidimensional account of participants' experiences and the factors influencing their support relationships. The findings show that both the experience of spousal loss and the structure of social support networks are shaped by various factors, including gender, social class, education, health, and social capital. These results also underscore the necessity of adopting a life course perspective rather than an age-based approach. Accordingly, initiatives and efforts to promote quality of life in later life must take into account the dynamic and multidimensional nature of loss and support relations.
