Abstract (EN)

This research aims to investigate the discourses and the resources of these discourses (interpretative repertoires) of young adults who have just become parents on motherhood and fatherhood. Within the scope of this purpose, in-depth interviews are made with 6 mothers and 6 fathers between the ages of 26-39. Interviews are all tape-recorded and then transcribed. The texts of the interviews are analyzed by "discourse analysis". The analysis is made with regard to basis of discourses on motherhood and discourses on fatherhood. As a result of analysis, five different interpretative repertoires are obtained as resources for discourses on motherhood; "responsible/good motherhood", "joyful/happy motherhood", "tough motherhood", "ideal motherhood" and "holy motherhood". Four different interpretative repertoires are obtained as resources for discourses on fatherhood; "tough fatherhood", "protective fatherhood", "being father of a girl" and "irresponsible/helper fatherhood". This study manifests that traditional/pariarchal discourses are still dominant in the explanationds of mothers and fathers on motherhood and fatherhood. On the other hand, we can see that they are combined with "modern/equalitarian" discourses. While both mothers and father talking about importance of sharing the parenting duties, they also give the primary responsibility to the mothers with regard to "the nature of motherhood". Keywords: Motherhood, fatherhood, parenting, family, disourse analysis, interpretative repertoires
