Examination of planning for improving vocabulary in Turkish language textbook prepared according to the primary education curriculum

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is systematic planning in texts in Turkish language textbooks prepared in accordance with primary education 1-4. grades Turkish language curriculum to teach students about the question of how words are made within a framework based on the teaching of vocabulary instruction. Document review method in qualitative research approach was used in this study. Document review is defined as the analysis of written materials that contain information about the targeted investigation of facts or events. To determinate planning quality of vocabulary instruction in Turkish language textbooks and its current practices, research document was selected as 1., 2., 3., and 4. Grades Turkish language textbooks approved by the Board of Education within the Ministry of National Education for primary education level and published by the Turkish Ministry of Education for 2012-2013 academic year.The research, carried out in seven stages. Each grade level texts were separated from accessible materials, keywords in work activities of texts and word activities examining the targeted keywords were listed. In accordance with each sub-problem on the lists were analyzed. The words that make up the data set of the study were subjected to a systematic content analysis. In this process, categories were developed, analysis units were determined and finally quantifying was completed.The findings showed that there is no a systematic planning which is based on the primary school texts in Turkish textbooks for the vocabulary instruction on the themes and grade levels. Themes and classes of irregular increase and decrease of the number of words in which, and the text should be in a specific order that the distribution took place in too many different words emerged. With these results, the numbers of repeated words among the texts, the themes, and the classes are very little. These findings have been revealed the importance of vocabulary instruction and recommendations are given on how to do a planned way.
