Typography as a visual communication instrument in new media art

Typography symbolizes the evolution of letters from concrete signs to abstract sound representations over thousands of years in the history of visual communication, shaping visual perception into a written language with the aid of technology. With the Industrial Revolution and the development of digital technologies, typography has undergone a wide range of technology-based transformations from printed texts to digital screens. With digital technologies, new media has pioneered the design of typography with software and code, and at the same time pioneered its development as a form of artistic expression. In new media art, typography has become an aesthetic element and a gateway to experimental areas where dynamic and interactive elements are integrated with the content. In this context, the aim of the study is not only to explore the various application areas of typography in screen-based and interactive media but also to explore in depth the creative potential in new media art by integrating digital typography in creating, designing, and programming through autonomous systems. In line with this purpose, the research started with a literature review to reveal the relationship between typography and technology, the data obtained were processed by descriptive content analysis method, and in line with the findings; examples suitable for examining the art- design dimension were selected and analyzed by purposeful sampling methods. The research findings aim to document the place of typography as a field of productive art in new media art, where we talk about designed art, and initiate new discussions.
