The encounter with the other through new media storytelling practices: The example of "Katarsis X-tra"

This thesis will analyse the process of confronting the social otherisation problem through the storytelling practices in the new media, in the sample of the programs 'Katarsis X-tra' and 'Geçecek mi?'. The programs included in the sample are broadcasted on YouTube and moderated by the psychologist Gökhan Çınar; they serve as a platform for individuals marginalized by society to tell their own life stories and make their voices heard. With the new media technologies, viewers can respond to content by commenting. In this study, the comments on the chosen videos will be analyzed with the post-structuralist feminist discourse analysis method. Comments on the videos and the new storytelling processes that these stories create will be discussed. As a result of the analysis, the ways that the storytelling in the videos raise awareness in relation to otherization for the audience, and the potential of developing discourses against the expression of otherization will be questioned.
