Abstract (EN)

The needs of humanity changes and these changes affect the venues as well. The non- functional old historical venues are returned to life by giving them a new function to exist. The old venues who exist but do not function in anyway must be given new purposes to continue to be valuably useful. In the first chapter; the purpose, content and method of the work are explained. In the second chapter; there are the history and architecture of "Han", and a map that shows the locations of Hans in Karaköy. The third chapter includes the study of concept of tourism and hotel. In the section of Concept of Tourism, the subjects of "hotel classification", "hotel design" and "consideration points of hotel design" and "the effects of hotel's function to the restoration of the historical building" are studied. In the forth chapter; "concept of refunctioning", "the reasons of the necessity for the refunctioning", and "the technics of refunctioning" are explained in separate headings. In the sixth chapter; the chosen han in Karaköy-Istanbul is examined and studied for the architectural characteristics of its facade and interiors. The refunctioning process is studied in detail with the support of photos and plans, and the changes such as additions and restorations on the building are explained. Nowadays, the tourism developers and investors are buying han buildings and restoring them into hotels. When touristic buildings are restored by refunctioning them as hotels, this helps the historical building to live longer and the economy is contributed, too. When the historical buildings are intervened unnecessarily with wrongful technics, they cannot preserve their originality and they get damaged because of the spatial force. When the restorations are done according to the regulations, the historical buildings are being protected and their lives are prolonged.
