The effect of kangaroo care and massage on suction success and physical parameters in newborn

The research was conducted clinically, randomized controlled and experimental to determine the effect of kangaroo care and infant massage on sucking success and physical parameters in newborns. The research was carried out between September 2017 and June 2019 at the Neonatology and obstetrics clinic of Düzce University Health Practice and Research Centre. As a result of the strength analysis, which sampled the study, 90 newborns followed in Neonatology and obstetrics clinic (30 Kangaroo Care, 30 baby massages and 30 control groups). Neonatal infants in the control group were not given any application except for routine clinical applications. Newborns in the experimental group were given kangaroo care and baby massage by their mothers. After kangaroo care and baby massage, sucking successes and physical parameters were evaluated. When the sucking success was evaluated, the LATCH researcher and LATCH Observer scores of the mothers in the control group were significantly lower than those in the kangaroo care and infant massage group (p<0.05). When the results of the physical parameters were evaluated, it was found that the physiological measurement values of the newborns in the experimental group were positively affected after kangaroo care and infant massage applications (p<0.05). As a result, kangaroo care and infant massage positively affected the newborn's sucking success and life findings. In line with the results obtained from the study, kangaroo care and infant massage application is recommended as an alternative method for increasing sucking success in newborns and maintaining stable physical parameters.
