Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to determine the factors effecting the preferences of students studying at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University for local and foreign fast food products. In addition, this study aims to understand the place of fast food eating habits in everyday life and to determine preference differences influencing the choice of local and foreign fast food products. The data for this study is collected by the researcher in face-to-face interviews with a questionnaire from a population of 35847 actively studying students at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. For the analysis of data, SPSS 14 package program is used. Frequency values and percentages are presented first and then findings about fast food consumption tendencies are presented. To analyze the relationship between variables, T-test, Anova, Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis tests are applied. The sample size for this research is calculated as n=381. However, for increasing reliability of the research, the sample size is enlarged to be n=600. Questionnaires with mistakes and missing fields are excluded from the data set resulting in n= 532. 66.4 % (n=353) of participants expressed that they consume fast food, while 33.5 % (n= 178) indicated that they sometimes consume fast food. A great majority of participants indicated that they consume fast food for lunch (34 %, n= 181) and for late afternoon (46.8 %, n= 249). Fast food consumption usually took place on location (52,4 %, n= 279). While the most preferred fast food products in local fast food businesses are x döner, durum, lahmacun, pide, for foreign fast food businesses, the most preferred fast food products are burghers, chips, pizza and baked potatoes. Preference for the type of drinks is shaped by the type of fast food consumed. While ayran is the preferred drink consumed with local fast food products, with foreign fast food products, carbonated drinks (cola, fanta, fizzy drinks) are consumed. It is observed that for foreign fast food products there are significant differences among the factors effecting the choice of participants as popularity, standardized taste and quality and physical space (p<0,01; p<0,05), while for local fast food products, there are significant differences among the factors effecting the choice of participants as suitability of price, and palatability of the food consumed (p<0,01; p<0,05).
