Abstract (EN)
This study examines the problems encountered in the field of occupational health and safety (OHS) during demolition and dismantling activities carried out within the scope of urban transformation processes in Türkiye. Following the 1999 Marmara Earthquake, the increase in risky buildings accelerated urban transformation projects and made them a national priority. However, this process has not been limited to the renewal of buildings; it has also acquired a complex and multidimensional structure involving social, economic, environmental, and legal aspects. The study identifies major problems in demolition projects such as planning deficiencies, legal uncertainties, financial inadequacies, technical risks, and environmental impacts. In terms of OHS, the most critical risks are falls, collapses, accidents caused by electricity and gas, and asbestos exposure. In conclusion, the success of urban transformation projects depends on conducting demolition processes in a safe, planned, and sustainable manner. Otherwise, the healthy progress of the process and the achievement of desired objectives will be seriously jeopardized.
