Abstract (EN)

Snake envenomation is a reason of serious mortality and morbidity in trophicalzones. Because of the hot climate of Çukurova region, snake envenomation is seenoftenly. 30 consecutive patient complaining of snake envenomation between April 2009and May 2011 were enrolled in this prospective study. İmproper first aid had beenperformed in 17 of 30 patients. At the time of administration 17 patients were in Stage1, 8 were in Stage 2 and 5 were in Stage 3. Fortyseven vial antivenom wasadministration to these patients. No complication was seen because of antivenoms andno patient died because of envenomation. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between TNF-?, BNP andIL-1 levels and the severity of clinical envenomation. These patients were stagedaccording to their clinical findings and TNF-?, BNP and IL-1 levels were compared onthe application time and on the 12th hour after medical treatment. The increase of TNF-?, BNP and IL-1 levels within the application time and 12th hour after the treatment wasstatistically significant. While the stage of the clinical envenomation increased, these 3 parametersincreased too. These increments found statistically significant between stage 1 and 2.However because of the paucity of adequate sample size on Stage 3, the increase onthese parameters found not significant between Stage 2 and Stage 3.
