Abstract (EN)

11 ABSTRACT Master of Science Thesis ADSORPTION OF LEAD AND CADMIUM IONS ONTO THE CHEMICALLY MODÖTED SURFACE OF GLASS Yasemin ÇİMEN Anadolu University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Chemistry Program Supervisor: AssocProf. Hayrettin Türk 2002, 56 pages In this study, surface modified glass microbeads with sulfur containing ligands- cystamine and 2-aminoethanethiol were prepared and their use in the removal of lead and cadmium ions from water was investigated. In the first part of the study, glass microbeads were first reacted with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy$ilane to introduce amine functionality to their surfaces, next these amineted-glass microbeads were reacted with ethylenediaminetetraacetk acid to introduce acid functionalities to their structures. After converting the acid groups to the sodium salt, cystamine and 2-aminoethanethiol were bound to the carboxylate groups on the glass by ion-exchange. Chemically modified glass microbeads were characterized using elementel analysis and FTIR spectra. Based on the amount of S, each gram of glass microbeads contain 2,lxl0"2 meq cystamine and 4,2x1 0 2 meq 2-aminoethanethiol. In the second part of the study, the dependence of lead and cadmium adsorptions onto the modified glass adsorbent was investigated by varying pH, temperature, initial ion concentration and the amount of adsorbent. When SO mg adsorbent was used in 100 ppm solution of cadmium or lead, the amount of adsorbed cadmium was 89-92 ppm for cystamine containing microbeads, 80-95 ppm for 2-aminoethanethiol containing microbeads and the amount of adsorbed lead was 80-90 ppm for cystamine containing microbeads, 90-97 ppm for 2-aminoethanethiol containing microbeads.
