Road safety for inividuals with mental retardation

By accepting existence of individuals with mental retardation in society, providing a sustainable easy life to them, covers duties of government with all means. In this context, with special helps, some part of individuals with mental retardation are tried to be adapted to current conditions, the ones with no education opportunities due to financial terms are provided to be saved against hard conditions. This study, by laying down current conditions and road safety of individuals with mental retardation in urban areas, aims education of skill about road safety in city traffic and to make easy life of families who want to take their children to the outside with some modifying suggestion. The population rate of individuals with mental retardation in our country is presented pursuant to statistical data: by considering high rates, the duties of institutions to provide traffic services and road safety in cities, the policies of our country about the matter and other matters to be cared by individuals with mental retardation in providing road safety are included. The traffic training in education programs of individuals are examined, studies have been performed on current conditions about training of movement skills in traffic with or without parents. After laying down the current condition, an easy and applicable sample training model has been tried to be established to teach road safety in city traffic to individuals with mental retardation and their parents, to make their actions easy in social life. Besides training of individuals, other training programs should be included to provide safe travel of individuals with mental retardation with themselves as walker or passenger by providing training and informing of trainers, parents and all society about this issue.
