Since the turn of the twenty-first century, the world has experienced many episodes of high economic policy uncertainty (EPU). Recent repercussions of climate change also raised concerns about climate policy uncertainties (CPU). The thesis aims to investigate the interactions of EPU and CPU with climate change for emerging (EME) and developed countries. It also tests Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis that proposes an inverted U-shaped curve between affluence and environmental degradation. Two models were created and tested, Model 1 with EPU and Model 2 with CPU. Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimations with Model 1 reveal that population escalates climate change in both country groups in the long-term. Consistent with consumption effect, EPU decreases consumption of energy and pollution-intensive commodities and mitigates climate change in EMEs in the long-term. Renewable energy consumption also alleviates climate change in both country groups in the short-term. Thus, energy transition holds the key to tackling climate change. The EKC hypothesis is verified only with Model 1 and for EMEs, implying that they are expected to benefit from increased adoption of clean technologies. In Model 2, EKC hypothesis cannot be verified in any country groups but CPU alleviates climate change in EMEs in the short-term. This might be because of the reliance of economic agents` decisions on current and future policy expectations. In the additional analysis, we find evidence in OECD countries for the interrelation of energy-related indicators with current account deficit. We conclude that energy policies are related to the well-being of countries' economies.
Tahvil risk primleri: Türkiye'den analitik kanıtlar
The term structure of government bond yields provides valuable and predictive information. In the first part of this dissertation, I decompose the Turkish government nominal bond yields into their risk-neutral rate and term premium components, and then investigate the local and global drivers of each component separately. One key finding is that spillovers from the U.S. bond market to the Turkish local bond market mainly work through the channel from the U.S. term premia to the Turkish term premia, and solely during the pre-November 2017 period. Regarding the impacts of unconventional bond purchases by the Central Bank of Turkey (CBT), along with the bond purchases by local banks under the scope of the "Asset Ratio" (AR) regulation and the liraization strategy, on the yield components, the results reveal the operations of signaling and duration risk channels in lowering local risk-neutral rates and term premia, respectively. In the second part, I decompose the breakeven inflation (BEI) rates in Turkey. An important finding is that the local bond market does not price in the differential liquid premium between nominal and inflation-indexed bonds. Next, I explore the main determinants of the inflation risk premium component. Notably, changes in the Brent crude oil prices exert a strong positive impact on variations in the country's inflation risk premia. Moreover, there is a statistically significant negative effect of the liraization strategy on inflation risk premia dynamics. Finally, I conduct an ex ante cost-benefit analysis of issuing nominal versus inflation-indexed bonds from the perspective of the Turkish Treasury.
Theories of linguistic efficiency, such as Zipf's (1949) law, claim that languages reduce effort by favoring simpler or more economical forms whenever possible. Although this claim has widely been tested and confirmed in spoken languages (e.g., Givon, 1983; Gundel, Hedberg, & Zacharski, 1993), it has not been addressed to the same extent in sign languages. This thesis investigates how such theories would be realized in Turkish Sign Language (TİD) through discourse cohesion and phonetic reduction in the narratives of TİD. With a story-retelling production experiment, discourse cohesion has been analyzed using a quantized measure of accessibility adapted from Ariel's (1990) framework. In particular, I examine referring expression forms (e.g., nominal versus verbal) that native and late-signing deaf adult TİD signers employ in narratives. The articulatory phonetic aspect of narratives has been analyzed using MediaPipe, an open-source computer vision tool. The results of the discourse cohesion experiment indicated a strong relationship between the cognitive accessibility scores of referents and the discourse context (e.g., first mention, maintenance, re-introduction), type of the referring expression, and age of acquisition in TİD, which aligned well with previous research on spoken language and other sign languages. The results of the computational phonetic analysis showed the forms that TİD signers used underwent phonetic reduction as the cognitive accessibility of a referent increased. They had shorter duration, smaller hand movement, and narrower signing space. Age of acquisition or delayed first acquisition did not significantly affect these measures except for duration, in which native signers retold the events faster than late signers. In conclusion, this thesis reconciles discourse cohesion and phonetic reduction within the framework of linguistic efficiency by offering a novel methodology to analyze signed discourse using both an experimental and computational approach.
Aile (1947-1952) dergisinde çeviri yoluyla hayali bir Türk ailesi inşa etmek
This study focuses on the Turkish household magazine Aile (1947-1952) and explores the narrative it builds around the 'imagined' Turkish family shaped by translational and editorial practices. Published quarterly by Yapı Kredi Bank, Aile was a part of the bank's cultural initiatives led by its founder, Kâzım Taşkent, and editor-in-chief Vedat Nedim Tör. Both figures were committed to Kemalist ideals and sought to modernize Turkish society through various cultural projects. Aile adopted this mission as it combined articles on literature, art, and family relations with sections on parenting, childcare, and marriage that often relied on translations from foreign sources. The primary aim of this dissertation is to investigate how translation was used in the magazine to construct an idealized image of the Turkish family, one that aligned with the Kemalist vision. By examining both original and translated content through a comprehensive analysis of all 20 issues of the magazine and a selection of its sources, the study reveals that the magazine employed translation not only to promote modern values but also to reinforce traditional gender roles. The dissertation further emphasizes the agency of editors Vedat Nedim Tör and Şevket Rado, demonstrating their influence in shaping Aile's narrative and content. This study highlights the critical role of translation in constructing narratives and examines the concept of the imagined family as reflected in Aile. It contributes to broader discussions on the intersection of media, translation, and societal change, offering insights into how editorial and translational practices helped shape the representation of the modern Turkish family during a transformative period.
What drives mainstream stateless nationalist parties to adopt secessionist positions? Over the past decade, independence referendums in Catalonia and Scotland have made this question a timely and crucial topic in studies of political parties and nationalism. Although these referendums did not result in the creation of new states, they represented the most concrete attempts toward secession. Using process-tracing and semi-structured in-depth interviews with political elites and activists, this comparative study examines the political strategies of the Democratic Convergence of Catalonia and the Scottish National Party, the mainstream nationalist parties in their respective contexts. It seeks to address the puzzle of how these two parties, positioned on the relatively moderate end of the stateless nationalist party family spectrum, moved beyond the discourse of secessionism to undertake a concrete initiative toward independence through referendums. The study analyzes the divergent paths of radicalization in their territorial strategies and their strategic ambiguities, oscillating between rupture and bargaining. It explains this process through three interrelated variables: the "loosely framed" constitutional contexts at the center, escalating demands for fiscal sovereignty in the periphery, and the internal configuration of secessionism. Challenging traditional structuralist approaches, it highlights the interplay between leadership agency and institutional contexts at critical junctures, framing secessionism as a heterogeneous and dynamic phenomenon.
This design study aims to develop and implement a program to equip preservice teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them to teach proof. The educational policies that guide mathematics education, teacher preparation, and professional development opportunities were examined to shape the designed program. Eight experts in mathematics and mathematics education were interviewed. Preservice teachers' proof knowledge and beliefs on proof were obtained through developed data collection tools. The program, consisting of two modules on content and pedagogical content knowledge, was implemented for eight weeks for two groups of preservice teachers in two cycles. The implementations in the second cycle followed the first cycle one week later. The learning processes of the participants in the program were evaluated by observations of their performances and through quizzes and exams. At the end of the program, the participants designed proof-based activities for geometry objectives and taught geometry proofs to a student. Semi-structured interviews with ten participants provided feedback on the effectiveness of the program and the learning processes. At the end of the program, it was observed that preservice teachers' knowledge about proof and teaching proof improved. Preservice teachers' beliefs about constructing proof and students' proof skills developed positively.
Zaman algısının duyusal motor mekanizmaları: Öngörü mekanizmaları üzerinden bir zamansal kısalma incelemesi
Temporal binding refers to the perception that two events, which are related in terms of their cause and effect, occur closer together in time than they actually do. This effect not only creates a perceived cause-and-effect relationship but also compresses the time interval between events. Since the influential article on the intentional binding effect was published by Haggard, Clarke, and Kalogeras in 2002, researchers put forth several necessary conditions for the explanation of the effect. While proximity in time and predictability play a crucial role, it is primarily causality that determines the outcome rather than intentional action. According to Buehner (2012), causality is the fundamental factor behind the effect. Despite the productive work done in this area, there is still much to be discovered about the mechanisms that underlie temporal binding. In this thesis, we aim to investigate two main aspects of temporal binding. Firstly, we aim to determine whether the act of performing an action alone is sufficient to induce temporal binding or if outcome prediction plays a critical role. To achieve this, we conduct a series of experiments to compare congruent and incongruent outcomes, with the aim of uncovering the underlying mechanisms that cause this intriguing time distortion. Secondly, we examine the various factors that contribute to temporal binding. In addition to outcome prediction, we investigate the role of temporal control, which is the ability to dictate timing, in shaping our perception of time. We aim to understand how different factors affect temporal binding by analyzing each component.
Nükleer güç, emek ve çevre: Akkuyu NGS
The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the city of Mersin in Turkey marks a turning point for the country's historical nuclear ambitions. Laden with promises of development, catching up with the developed world, and achieving welfare; the Akkuyu NPP holds immense symbolic power in the national imaginary. As an infrastructure megaproject; the Akkuyu NPP has been challenged by environmental mobilization at different conjunctures. However, these patterns of resistance are shaped and constrained by socioeconomic and political conditions at each historical stage. This study looks at these conditions as areas of conflict for environmental mobilization; and in this respect, investigates the impact of uneven distribution of costs and benefits, question of labor and employment, and discursive legitimization. It considers the way in which the Akkuyu NPP persisted and acquired popular consent for its existence, in order to seek answers to the broader question of linking environmental struggles with social injustice.
