Effect of technology on return and risk metrics for insurance firms

The advent of Insurtech is catalyzing a transformative shift in the operational landscape of the insurance industry, reshaping its entire value chain. From product development, market strategies, and distribution channels to fundamental functions like pricing, underwriting, and claims processing, Insurtech has become ingrained in every facet of the industry. A key facet of Insurtech's impact lies in its facilitation of collaboration among industry participants, enabling the sharing of infrastructure. This collaborative approach signifies a departure from traditional models and holds the potential to create a more robust and interconnected insurance ecosystem. Furthermore, Insurtech is steering the insurance industry towards high-quality development. It facilitates advancements such as scenario-based insurance, tailored product customization, optimized services, targeted underwriting processes, and instantaneous claims settlement. These innovations address longstanding challenges that were a source of public discontent, paving the way for an era of high-quality development within the industry. In essence, this research explores the pervasive influence of Insurtech, not only as a technological enabler but as a driving force behind the evolution of the insurance industry. It analyzes how Insurtech is contributing to the creation of a new operational paradigm, fostering collaboration, mitigating weaknesses, and propelling the industry towards a future marked by high-quality, customer-centric, and technologically advanced insurance solutions.

The application of nanofluid systems containing iron oxide nanoparticles in double pipe heat exchanger

The thermophysical properties of fluids, including water, ethylene glycol, and oils utilized in heat transfer applications, are typically lower than those of metals and metal oxides. The colloidal stabilization of nanoparticles in these carrier fluids has been shown to result in a substantial enhancement of the thermophysical properties of the base fluid, including density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. This increase is observed to vary in accordance with the particle concentration. Consequently, there is a growing interest in investigating the efficacy of nanofluids in heat transfer applications. In this study, the colloidal stabilization of iron oxide nanoparticles, synthesized by the co-precipitation method and modified with PAA, was achieved in an aqueous medium, and the relevant thermophysical properties were measured as a function of temperature and concentration. Finally, the heat transfer performance of the water-based nanofluid containing iron oxide nanoparticles was investigated by utilizing a double-pipe heat exchanger. The results obtained demonstrate that iron oxide nanoparticles modified with PAA exhibit adequate colloidal stability in aqueous medium across a range of concentrations. It was determined that the addition of nanoparticles leads to a concentration-dependent increase in the density and viscosity values of the carrier fluid, accompanied by a decrease in its thermal conductivity. In the experimental analysis of the relevant nanofluid utilizing a double-pipe heat exchanger, it was observed that the convective heat transfer coefficient decreased with the incorporation of nanoparticles in comparison to the base fluid which was attributed to the relatively higher viscosity and lower thermal conductivity values of the nanofluid.

Dynamical systems and reaction kinetics networks

This thesis investigates the interaction between dynamical systems theory and chemical reaction kinetics. Focusing on the Brusselator and Lengyel–Epstein models, it analyzes the conditionsunderwhichthesesystemstransitionfromstableequilibriatoperiodicoscillations (via Hopf bifurcation) and spatial patterns (via Turing bifurcation). The stability of the systems is first studied in the context of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), followed by the inclusion of diffusion to formulate reaction-diffusion systems. Linear stability analysis using Jacobian matrices and eigenvalues is employed to identify bifurcation thresholds, and numerical simulations are conducted to visualize pattern formation. The primary goal is to provide theoretical and computational insights into the mechanisms underlying complex behaviorsobservedinchemistryandbiology,andtodemonstratehowsuchbehaviorsemerge underspecific parametricconditions.

Representations of public spaces in television series: The case of Medcezi̇r

Industrialization, globalization, and neoliberal policies have rapidly transformed urbanization processes in Turkey, leading to the emergence of different housing typologies and spatial segregations. While the traditional neighbourhood fabric represents a mode of life based on public space use, social relations, and a sense of belonging, gated communities embody a contrasting lifestyle defined by individuality, security, controlled access, and status indicators. Television series, through their fictional narratives, are significant visual cultural products that render the relationship between society and urban space visible. With their potential to reach broad audiences, they serve as powerful instruments in conveying social dynamics, spatial representations, and class-based divisions. In this context, Medcezir stands out as a remarkable example that makes visible the social and spatial transformations of a particular period in Turkey through popular culture. Selected as the case study, Medcezir illustrates, more distinctively than many of its counterparts, how different housing typologies expose processes of social segregation and spatial fragmentation. In this thesis, the series' scenes are analysed through methods of architectural and visual-narrative analysis. The architectural features of spatial settings, the use of public and semi-public spaces, the interaction between interior and exterior environments, and the influence of cinematographic techniques (such as camera angles and lighting) on architectural representation are examined, thereby revealing the social dimensions of urban space to the audience. This research demonstrates that television series are not only cultural products but also valuable analytical tools for studying spatial and class based segregation, as well as the dynamics of public and private realms. In doing so, it brings architectural representations often overlooked in the discipline of architecture into the discussion through visual cultural products and contributes a new methodological perspective to understanding the city, space and society nexus.

Investigation of the roles of aging and caloric restriction on arterial biomechanics

Aging significantly contributes to the onset of cardiovascular diseases. The structural and functional alterations such as stiffening of arteries, vascular remodeling, and dysfunction of endothelium are associated with aging. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the impacts of aging and different types of caloric restriction (CR) on arterial biomechanics. In this research, 10-week-old male C57/BL6 mice were divided into 3 groups: Ad libitum (AL), chronic caloric restriction (CCR; 25% of food restriction of AL group) and intermittent CR (ICR; 3 weeks of 50% food restriction (ICR-R) followed by AL feeding for 3 weeks (ICR- RF)) and fed until 85 weeks of mouse age. After overnight fasting of animals, mesenteric resistance arteries (MRAs) were isolated from 10 (young), 46/49 (middle age), and 82/85(old) weeks old animals. Vascular reactivity, passive, active and endothelium- dependent responses were assessed by using wire myography. In addition, immunofluorescence (IF) was performed to visualize and quantify elastin, collagen IV and desmin proteins in the MRAs. The internal diameter and arterial stiffness were significantly increased with aging in 82/85-week-old AL group compared to 10-week-old group. Internal diameters were 236.8±10.85 μm and 313±10.3 μm at 10-week-old and 82/85-week-old mice in AL group, respectively (p<0.05). Arterial stiffness indexes were 13.8±0.77 mN/mm and 17.3±1.11 mN/mm at 10-week-old and 82/85-week-old mice in AL group, respectively. But internal diameter and arterial stiffness were not changed with ageing in CCR group. On the other hand, internal diameter (336±19.03 μm) and arterial stiffness index (19±1.8 mN/mm) were significantly increased with aging in 82-week-old ICR-R group of mice compared to 10-week-old mice (p<0.05). In conclusion, lifelong CCR prevented outward hypertrophic remodeling and age associated arterial stiffness of MRAs in 82/85-week-old male mice. In addition, only three weeks of AL feeding after three weeks of 50 % CR application mitigated the vascular aging effects. These results demonstrate that the beneficial effects of CR in CVD could be via vascular remodeling mechanisms, specifically modulating arterial lumen diameter and stiffness.

Tracing the uncanny in ordinary spaces: The movie Anayurt Hotel

This thesis evaluates how a personal feeling such as the uncanny can be produced through ordinary spaces from an architectural perspective, aiming to reveal this process through spatial analyses within the discipline of cinema. This study is based on the question of how spaces defined as ordinary can become uncanny. By arguing that user perception plays as much of a role as design factors in the process of ordinary spaces becoming uncanny, the study aims to lay the grounds for a debate that challenges the boundaries of architecture in the literature. The study's method consists of establishing a theoretical framework based on a literature review, followed by a case study in which spatial examinations are conducted based on scenes selected from the film Anayurt hotel. The concept of the uncanny is evaluated in different disciplines from various perspectives, such as uncertainty, the return of the repressed, the unfamiliarity of the familiar, sensory perception, and social context. This multi-layered approach makes it possible to evaluate space not only as a physical but also as a psychological and cultural formation. In this context, the case study section of the thesis selected scenes from the film Anayurt hotel that are appropriate for the concept of ordinary space and conducted spatial analyses of these scenes in line with the psychological transformations of the characters. These analyses were supported by images taken from the film. The study evaluates how subjective feelings such as the uncanny can emerge in ordinary spaces from an architectural perspective and explains this process through spatial analyses conducted within the discipline of cinema. It was concluded that spaces can transform in line with user experiences and subjective feelings such as the uncanny, and that architecture can direct space design and user perception to a certain extent but cannot influence them completely. This thesis aims to prepare the ground for a debate in the literature that questions the limits of architecture by arguing that user perception is as influential as design factors in the use of space.

Fault diagnosis in rotating machines using machine learning

Bearing fault detection plays an important role in machine maintenance and machine health control. In this study, data obtained from the Case Western University (CWRU) data center website is used. The purpose of using this dataset is to classify faulty and non-faulty bearing signals. In this study, a deep learning- based approach is proposed to classify faulty and non-faulty bearing signals. A dataset is obtained by creating spectrograms from Drive End and Normal Baseline Dataset taken from Bearing Data Center. Three different Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models with low, medium and large number of parameters are created. These three models are compared to classify faults. Although satisfactory results are obtained from all three models, the accuracy rate of the high parameter model is almost error-free. This study emphasizes increasing accuracy in proportion to the complexity of the models on fault classification. The results suggest that deep learning models can distinguish between faulty and non-faulty bearings, indicating that spectrogram analysis is useful in machine fault detection systems.

The analysis of immersive experience of space in 3D animation practices

The concept ofspace is very important in animation, which enhances the connection between space and animation. Over time, the storytelling approach in animation has evolved through the effective use of animation technologies in films, TV series, commercials, education, and other fields, leading to advances in animation technologies. With these technological advancements, the sense of space in 3D animations has also become more immersive. The aim of this study is to identify the components of an immersive spatial experience in 3D animation productions, to demonstrate how the concept of 'immersion" can be created in animations, to explore how the spatial experience in animations has evolved with technological developments, and to contribute to the literature by examining the relationship between animation and space. The study involves showing film clips from different technological periods with varying technical proficiency to a focus group created through a purposive sampling model, in order to determine the impact of technological developments on immersion. It also includes conducting live interviews and survey studies. Examples from different decades related to the topic were selected, and in these productions, the concept of creating spatial immersion using 3D animation techniques was examined within the context of space-character, space-plot, and space-viewer experiences. The spatial analyses of productions were conducted based on technology, narration, spatial elements, characters, and color variables. As a result of the study, it was understood that the technology, which has changed and developed over time, significantly influences the spatial experience in productions utilizing 3D animation technologies. With advancements in 3D animation technologies, spatial experiences across different platforms have reached audiences, and the immersiveness of these spatial experiences has also increased.

Medeni usul hukukumuzda hakem kararlarına karşı kanun yolları

Devlet yargılamasına alternatif bir uyuşmazlık çözüm yolu olarak kabul edilen ve taraf iradesinin ön planda tutulduğu tahkim yargılamasında verilen hakem veya hakem kurulu kararları, mahkeme kararları ile aynı değere, kesin hüküm etkisine ve icra kabiliyetine sahiptir. Bu durum, hakem kararlarının devlet mahkemeleri tarafından belirli bir ölçüde denetlemesini gerektirmiştir. Türk Hukuk sisteminde hakem kararlarının denetimi için mülga Hukuk Usulü Muhakemeleri Kanunu'nda "temyiz" kanun yolu düzenlemiş iken, bu kanundan sonra yürürlüğe giren Milletlerarası Tahkim Kanunu'nun 15. maddesi ile "iptal davası" kanun yolu getirilmiş, daha sonra yürürlüğe giren 6100 sayılı Hukuk Muhakemeleri Kanunu'nun 439. maddesi ile de iptal davası düzenlenmiş ve böylece pek çok ülkede yaygın bir şekilde kabul edilen "iptal davası" kanun yolu benimsenmiştir. Hakem kararlarına karşı kanun yolu olan iptal davasını merkezine alan bu çalışmada, öncelikle hakem kararı kavramı, iptal davasının kanun yolu olma özelliği, hakem kararlarına karşı kanun yollarına ilişkin düzenlemelerin tarihsel gelişimi ve mukayeseli hukuk ile Türk Hukuk sistemindeki durumu, kanunda sınırlı olarak sayılan iptal sebepleri, hakem kararının iptaline ilişkin usuli meseleler, Yargıtaya yansıyan uyuşmazlıklar, doktrin görüşleri, iptal davası sonucunda verilen karara karşı temyiz kanun yoluna başvuru ve neticeleri, hakem kararlarının olağanüstü bir yolla iptali imkanı veren yargılamanın iadesi müessesesi açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. The investigation of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease through qualitative methods from a psychosocial perspective

ABSTRACT THE INVESTIGATION OF AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS DISEASE THROUGH QUALITATIVE METHODS FROM A PSYCHOSOCIAL PERSPECTIVE This thesis aims to explore the psychosocial experiences of individuals diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their caregiving relatives throughout the illness trajectory, from the initial recognition of symptoms to diagnosis and care processes, using qualitative research methods. ALS is approached not merely as a progressive neurological disease, but as a multilayered life experience that reorganizes time, body, language, relationships, and the sense of self. The study is grounded in a psychosocial perspective, focusing on process experiences in which individual subjectivities and social-relational contexts are deeply intertwined. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, written narratives, and ethnographic observations with individuals living with ALS and their caregivers. The analysis was conducted using narrative, discourse-oriented, and thick description-based qualitative analytic approaches. Findings reveal that the ALS experience does not follow a uniform or linear course. Instead, it unfolds as a dynamic process shaped by themes such as uncertainty, rupture, waiting, care, solidarity, and meaning-making. For many participants, the moment of diagnosis constitutes a biographical disruption, while caregiving relationships and social connections play a crucial role in the reorganization of life narratives. Language, silences, and storytelling emerge as central spaces through which the experience is both expressed and transformed. By moving beyond statistical representations of a rare disease, this study seeks to render visible the lived experiences and relational dimensions of ALS. It aims to contribute to clinical psychology by offering a psychosocial understanding that can inform assessment, therapeutic work, and support practices with individuals living with ALS and their caregivers.
