Forward and inverse fuzzy based model predictive control of a turbocharged diesel engine with high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system

The main purpose of this study is to reduce the number of iterations and reduce the optimization duration by taking advantage of the initialization of the optimization solver in an appropriate point. The model to be used for estimation in the controller is a fuzzy model and it is non-linear. Fuzzy modeling is a widely used method for modeling high non-linear systems. Since the engine is an example of high non-linear systems, the fuzzy model is employed in order to capture the dynamics of the engine in all operation range. The fuzzy model is based on first order regression method, which takes one sample delayed outputs as inputs in order to be a dynamical model. An inverse fuzzy model is employed to initialize the optimization solver in an appropriate point and it is based on second order regression method which takes one and two sample delayed outputs as inputs. The solver in a classical MPC uses the last manipulated variable values as the initial points in the current time step whereas the initialization is based on the inverse fuzzy model in this study. If the optimization is initialized with a proper point, then the optimization may be completed before restricted by the limits or find a better solution while the limits are active. The optimization algorithm that finds the optimal solution is the 'fmincon' function which is available in Matlab environment. The proposed MPC, standard MPC and PID controller performances in terms of the weak and superior aspects are compared. In addition, studies on fuzzy modeling are discussed. It is aimed to increase the knowledge and know-how in this area by applying an advanced control method to a difficult control problem.

Real–time target tracking and following with ur5 collaborative robot arm

Flight control system design of F-16 aircraft using robust eigenstructure assignment

In this thesis, the design of a modern flight control system using robust eigenstructure assignment for F-16 aircraft is studied. In the first chapter, the literature reviews of eigenstructure assignment and stability robustness are presented. The developments of the stability analysis beginning from SISO to MIMO approach are presented in terms of Nyquist theorem and singular value theory. The effect of singular value theory in the design and analysis of the eigenstructure assignment is emphasized. In the second chapter, F-16 aircraft mathematical model is introduced. The mathematical model includes six main components which are aerodynamic model, equations of motion, athmosphere model, engine model, actuator model and sensor models. Aerodynamic model is based on the wind tunnel test results of NASA Langley Research Center. In the third chapter, trim and linearization algorithms are derived. Trim algorithms are constructed for three flight conditions which are straight and level flight, climb and descent and coordinated turn. The search algorithm for trim operation is based on the Nelder-Mead optimization. Linearization algorithms are developed by decoupling the aircraft motion into two as longitudinal and lateral-directional. Longitudinal motion is further decoupled into two as short-period and phugoid aproximation. Similiarly, lateral-directional motion is decoupled into two as dutch-roll and roll-spiral approximation. These approximations are achieved by using the wind axis and stability axis state variables. In the fourth chapter, design of longitudinal CSAS is presented. The design technique is based on pole assignment. Pole assignment is performed by controller form decomposition. Five longitudinal CSAS are designed by pole assignment technique. The first three uses angle of atttack, pitch rate and normal acceleration feedbacks as command variables consecutively. The last two are the modified versions of pitch rate and normal acceleration CSAS which don't use angle of attack feedback. Control systems are designed in a fashion that the resultant closed loop characteristic polynomials will be the same. Hence, the eigenvalue sensitivity and stability robustness comparison are performed with the same design requirements. The effectiveness of the designed controllers are illustrated by nonlinear simulations. In the fifth chapter, design of lateral-directional CSAS is presented. Two design techniques are investigated which are non-robust and robust eignstructure assignment. Non-robust eigenstructure assignment is evaluated with two different eigenvector structures. The control law synthesis is performed by controller form decomposition which computes non-orthonormal null space basis vectors. The optimization cost function of the non-robust design is constructed in a way that it only includes mode decoupling properties of the system. Robust eigenstructure assignment is evaluated with a single eigenvector structure but with two different design methodologies. Both design methodologies are based on the orthonormal null-space basis vectors. The first one is design with fixed eigenvalues. This technique uses a fixed eigenvalue set and searchs for the optimal robust solution with four different cost functions. The first two cost functions are selected for eigenvalue snsitivity minimization and the last two are for stability optimization. Second design methodology is design with flexible eigenvalues. This technique mixes the eigenvalue locations into the optimization problem. The same cost functions are used as in the previous method and the feedback matrices are computed with a single step optimization procedure. Hence, the eigenvalue sensitivity and stability robustness comparison are performed for all the computed feedback matrices. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the designed controllers are illustrated by nonlinear simulations. In the last chapter, high angle of attack control problem is evaluated. A well-known design methodology is presented as in nonlinear dynamic inversion. Nonlinear dynamic inversion is applied at two steps which are slow and fast inversions. Nonlinear dynamic inversion and robust eigentructure assignment is compared with two high angle of attack maneuvers. These maneuvers are carried on with three different angle of attack values and the results are illustrated graphically.

Multi-objective optimization based fractional order PID controller design

Fractional calculus is related to situations where the order of the derivative and the integral are non-integer numbers. Even though the concepts of fractional order derivative and integral have existed for more than 300 years in the mathematical literature, the first meeting on this topic was held in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1974 [10]. At that time, this field only caught the attention of a few mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Nevertheless, the interest in fractional calculus grew considerably since then and currently there are countless studies dedicated to fractional calculus. This major growth in fractional calculus is mostly due to the applications in engineering fields, especially in control engineering. Control is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and mathematics that usually deals with controlling dynamic systems in order to achieve a certain behavior based on a set of specifications. To be able to properly modify a dynamic system, a mathematical model of the system is needed and the most common way to model dynamic systems (in linear systems) is by using integrals and derivatives. Therefore, extending the definitions of integrals and derivatives by using fractional calculus can improve their applicability. Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are without doubt the most popular controllers that are used in the industry due to their various benefits and the countless different tuning methods available. Recently, the use of fractional order PID (FOPID) controllers have started to increase as well. FOPID controllers have five free parameters (K_p,K_i,λ,K_d,μ) to select whereas PID controllers only have three (K_p,K_i,K_d), therefore this situation causes FOPID controllers to be much more complex and difficult to tune compared to PID controllers. On the other hand, due to the increased number of free parameters, FOPID controllers can be more flexible during the design process which suggests that by using FOPID controllers, it is more likely to obtain better results. A tuning rule for PID controllers was proposed in [15] by considering a trade-off between servo and regulation modes while constraining the maximum sensitivity value. First, a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem is created in which the trade-off between servo and regulation modes is considered. The aim is to minimize the integrated square error (ISE) for both modes while keeping the maximum sensitivity value between 1.4 and 2.0. A MOO algorithm is used to generate a set of optimal solutions which is called the Pareto set. From this Pareto set, the non-dominated solutions are selected to create the Pareto front, which is a trade-off curve where no solution is better than the others. From this Pareto front, the Nash solution is selected to determine the tuning rule. The Nash solution is subtracted from the worst solutions for both objective functions and the multiplication of these results are maximized. Later, simulation examples are given in order to prove the effectiveness of the method presented. The aim of this study is to design and compare the results of a PID controller and a fractional order PID controller for different cases. In the first case, the control problem is stated as minimizing the ISE value for both the set-point following and the disturbance rejection responses. The first case is similar to the problem stated in [15], except for in this study the maximum sensitivity value is not considered and FOPID controllers are designed in addition. In the second case, the control problem is stated as minimizing the integrated square error (ITSE) value for both the set-point following and the disturbance rejection responses. Lastly, in the third case, the control problem is stated as minimizing the weighted sum of the rise time and the settling time values and the overshoot precentage. Since all of these objective functions are in conflict, the problems are defined as multi-objective optimization problems and solved accordingly by using genetic algorithm to obtain the coefficients of the integer order and fractional order PID controllers. As a result, a set of Pareto optimal solutions is obtained and among these solutions the Nash bargaining solution is selected in order to make comparisons. For the first two cases, a first order plus dead time system model is used due to its simplicity and ability to represent higher order systems. For the third case, a second order plus dead time system model is used in order to minimize the overshoot percentage. Satisfactory results were obtained.

Vision based positioning ABB IRB 140 robot for gas leakage test automation

Technological progress has been recorded in factories over the past decade. Dangerous, repetitive and difficult tasks on production lines are carried out by automatic machines instead of people. The industrial robots provide significant flexibility and adaptability in production lines. With robotic working conditions, increased productivity and quality, independent production from the human labor force will take place. There will be integrated factories that are compatible with the Factory of Futures. The factories will use robots in a variety of tasks, and many research and development, performance improvement and complex control algorithms for robots are still being developed. It begins with the use of industrial robots in General Motors in 1961 for use in production lines. The first patent of industrial robots was taken by George Devol in 1965. Today, the number of industrial robots is increasing, especially in the automotive sector. By the end of 2017, a total of nearly 2 million industrial robot are being used. One of the benefits provided by the using robots is that movements are reproducible, accurate and reliable. However, it has been seen that robots do not work successfully in situations that change if they work on their own. According to the changing conditions, manual teaching will not be a solution because it takes a long-time procedure and processes that affect it completely. For this reason, it is one of the most important issues to be notified about the environment of robots in the automation processes, examples of which are vision based positioning robots. Computer vision applications contains methods for processing, analyzing and understanding images. High-dimensional data from the real world is often used to generate numerical and symbolic information with decision forms. The increasing use of these applications is a perception of the underlying vision of a computer vision. Computer vision applications are used in industry, medicine and robot technology. Vision based robot positioning started to be used in the early 1970s. Many working systems and approaches have been proposed theoretically and technically in image processing such as positioning and depth adjustment, feature selection and processing, camera models and calibration. In this thesis, firstly, a 6-axis ABB IRB 140 robot which are 3 are translational and 3 are rotational for robotic automatic test system is presented. ABB IRB 140 robot consists of 5 main parts. The first one is the controller of the robot where the robot is programmed and the drivers are found. The second one is robot arms where robot movements are made. The robot determines the mobility, its accessibility, and the maximum capacity according to the size and shape of the robot arms. The third is the drivers that determine the speed and acceleration of robot movements. The fourth is the gripper which is added to the tip of the robot and changes its relative position. A gas leak detector was used in this study. Finally, the sensors measure the speed and acceleration of the robot. Robot movements and target positions are defined in coordinate systems. Robots allow to work in many coordinates. These are base, world, work object and tool coordinate systems. The target position of the robots is determined according to the final position of the vehicle attached to the robot end effector, and this point is called the tool center point. The world coordinate system is used as the coordinate system in ABB IRB 140 robot. The kinematic and dynamic models of ABB IRB 140 are given. In the kinematic model of the robot there is a simplification of the mathematical Denavit Hartenberg algorithm. In this model, the robot calculates the position of the robot center point in the coordinate system depending on the joints. In the dynamic model, the interaction of the joints expressing the interaction of the joints is given. The ABB IRB 140 robot is programmed using the RAPID programming language. Robot relates to TCP-IP connection protocol and programmed in RoboStudio program on robot computer and the program of robot is installed. The ABB IRB 140 robot works in this project with an automation system in which the PLC and camera are controlled PC module. For this reason, the robot has been implemented with PLC. Robot receives all signals and information from PLC via Profinet communication protocol. In the second stage of the thesis study, image processing algorithms are explained and coordinate transformation and camera calibration are done. Digital image processing algorithms have been used in this study. These methods are threshold, morphological operators and color plane extraction methods. In the threshold method, segmentation is performed by assigning two or more classes of each pixel in the source image to the color images from the grayscale image. This method divides the image intended for processing by using at least one color or gray scale value. Morphological operators are an effective image processing method in nonlinear neighborhood processing. In morphological operators which are dilation, erosion, opening and closing operators are used. The size of the objects is enlarged in the dilation operator, and the size of the objects is reduced in the erosion operator. In the opening operator, objects close to each other are removed without any change, while objects in close operators are connected to each other. With the color plane extraction method, the color information is obtained. The positions obtained in the image processing method are included in the image coordinate system. However, the positions in the ABB IRB 140 program are defined in the world coordinate system. For this reason, coordinate transformation is performed with linear equations. Subsequently, the camera calibration for the coordinate transformation was done on a grid plane and the parameters were found. These parameters have been updated according to the depth change in the algorithm. At the next stage of the thesis work, a gas leakage test is carried out using robotic automation. In the heat pump dryer, the air in the drum has air flow to raise the air temperature and to extract the air from the ambient air, with the heat pump compressor. The heat pump dryer consists of compressor, condenser, evaporator and copper pipes connecting them. There are welding points on the copper pipe where the components are connected to each other. In this study, these welding points will be leak tested with ABB IRB 140 robot. Two types of tests are presented, which are the high pressure test and the equilibrium test. Firstly, a high pressure test will be performed. In this test, four welding points on the copper pipe leading to the condenser from the compressor are tested. The test is done when the gas in the pipe is between 15-20 bars behind the compressor stop. Secondly, the equilibrium test is performed. This test is performed by testing the 3 welding points of the pipe coming out from the compressor to evaporator. The test is made 10 seconds after the compressor stops and the high pressure test. The gas pressure in the pipe goes up to 9 bar. The positions of the welding points are varied due to various reasons. In this thesis, ABB IRB 140 robot system with vision based positioning is presented to provide the flexibility of correcting the gas leakage tests with robotic automation. The vision based positioning is to obtain position information from the image processing algorithm of the target robot. In this study, a single camera was used and the camera is mounted in a fixed position. In addition, in this thesis, the area of the welding points is divided into 3 according to the depths of the points and image processing algorithms are formed for each area. Algorithms re done with the NI Vision Assistant application and run in sequence in the Labview program. In the three image processing algorithms, mask operations are used in the original image to initially constrain the restrictive rectangle. The threshold operator is used to make the copper pipe visible. The threshold operator parameters are 72, 82 and 93, respectively. After the threshold method, the morphological operators are applied more than once in the same algorithm to protect the welded pipes and to sift the images with threshold values close to the copper pipe. After the copper pipe was obtained, the Lookup table was applied to the image obtained to change the dynamic intensity of the field in the image. After applying the lookup table, the original image is overlaid with the image obtained in the algorithm after the color plane of the image is extracted. Finally, it has been applied to three image processing algorithms to determine the welding points in the field with the maximum clamping operator. Finally, for demonstrating the performance of the gas leakage test with ABB IRB 140 robot with the vision based positioning, real-time experiment work has been carried out. The real-time experiments were performed by collecting the position data of 500 welding points and graphically and statistically examining the position data. The experimental results showed that the ABB IRB 140 robot application with image-based positioning was successful in capturing position deviations and performing the test. In the experiments, parameter update was done firstly according to the depth value in image processing areas. Secondly, the deviations of the welding points in the high pressure test have been investigated. In this test, it is seen that the deflection amount at the 6. and 7. welding points is more in the X axis. Then, the amount of deviations of the 1. and 2. welding points is less in the X axis. In the high pressure test, there is a minimum deviation of -187.8 mm and a maximum of 165.5 mm on the X axis. For this reason, it was observed that the ABB IRB 140 robot with vision based positioning on the X axis is successful. In the high-pressure test, the deviations of the 4 welding points are observed on the Y-axis but less than the X axis. At the welding points, a minimum deviation of -76.49 mm and a maximum of 92.43 mm was observed on the Y-axis. Third, the position deviation values of the welding points in the equilibrium test are examined. In this test, the amount of deviations of the 5. welding point is found to be larger that 3. and 4. welding points on the X axis. the amount of deviations on the X axis was observed to be less for at the 3. and 4. welding points. There is a minimum deviation of -122.8 mm and a maximum of 93.26 mm on the X axis. For this reason, it was observed that the ABB IRB 140 robot with image-based positioning on the X-axis was successful. At these welding points, the minimum deviation is -76.76 mm and the maximum deviations 77.03 mm was observed on the Y-axis. In summary, ABB IRB 140 robot application with vision based positioning for gas leak test has been realized in this Master thesis. In this study, a 6-axis ABB IRB 140 robot is used, the image processing algorithms are created to find the welding points on the copper pipe, the coordinate transformation is made between the camera and the robot, and position deviations are examined in real time applications to demonstrate the success of the application.

Type-2 fuzzy logic based linguistic pursuing strategy design with a real world application

The Interest in fuzzy logic has grown significantly in various working areas such as control system design, decision making, image processing, robotics, modelling and computing with words. The reason behind this huge interest is that fuzzy logic systems perform well against nonlinearities, uncertainties or unknown system dynamics since they imitate the human's way of thinking and act accordingly against not-well known or not clear enough situations. In this context, fuzzy logic systems have been implemented into various engineering applications where uncertainties and nonlinearities are high. In recent works, it has been shown that the performance of the conventional fuzzy logic systems, also known as the type-1 fuzzy logic systems, might be inadequate in defining the nonlinearities and uncertainties in some cases. Besides, it is seen that this insufficient performance of conventional fuzzy logic system moderately caused from the crisp membership grades of the implemented conventional or type-1 fuzzy sets. Thus, researchers have been proposed the type-2 fuzzy logic systems as the alternatives of type-1 fuzzy logic systems. It has been shown in several studies that type-2 fuzzy logic systems have the capability to handle or represent the uncertainties in a better way since they have an extra degree of freedom that is provided by the footprint of uncertainty. Type-2 fuzzy logic systems can be defined as the generalized versions of their type-1 counterparts. However, in handling of the type-2 fuzzy logic systems, an additional procedure is needed in type-2 fuzzy inference system that is defined as type reduction unlike their type-1 counterparts. The type reduction is applied to the antecedent type-2 membership functions of the fuzzy rules in order to reduce them into type-1 form before the defuzzification process. Type-2 fuzzy logic systems still have open problems since they have a complex internal structure and their high computational costs caused from the type reduction operation of type-2 fuzzy sets. Therefore, interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems, a special form of type-2 fuzzy logic systems, have been proposed to overcome this computational problem. Interval type-2 form of the fuzzy logic systems have becoming a dominating subject in the related fuzzy logic areas. In this context, it has been seen in several studies that especially interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems are widely used and employed since their capability to represent uncertainties in a better way and also their lower computational cost. In most of the applications of type-2 and interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems, the parameter footprint of uncertainty is usually handled as a design parameter and mostly it is tuned in order to decrease the effects of uncertainties and nonlinearities on the system performance. Therefore, there are also some studies have been performed in literature on how the size or shape of the footprint of uncertainty affects the interval type-2 fuzzy mapping. On the other hand, researchers have also worked on describing an interpretable relationship between the size of the footprint of uncertainty and the output of the interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems to use the advantages of the linguistic meaning of the interval type-2 fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic systems. In the light of these studies, interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems have become popular and widely employed to the real-world applications where unknowns, uncertainties and complexities are high such as control system design, computing with words, decision making and recently in computer and real-world games. Recently, games are gaining more and more attention among the researchers since they provide challenging, realistic and complex testbeds for computational intelligence and artificial intelligence structures and methods. In particular, pursuit-evasion game types have been commonly used in various studies as they can be defined as general problem of the many other robotic problems such as obstacle avoidance, leader-following and path-planning. The main goal of the pursuit-evasion games can be defined as; one or more pursuer tries to catch one or more evader in the probable shortest time while one or more evader tries to escape as much as possible. The various types of scenarios of the pursuit-evasion games are generally handled by the researchers who work on the area of mobile robotic. In the mobile robotic field, the pursuit-evasion games are mainly implemented to solve motion planning problems in complex, unknown and dynamic environments. In literature, the types of developed pursuit-evasion game scenarios have been shaped with respect to the limitation of the moving capabilities of the agents, number of the agents, the definition of the capture and structure of the game space. In order to solve this challenging pursuit-evasion game problem, different types of methods have been employed in literature such as dynamic programming, game theory and fuzzy logic theory. In this master thesis, we have proposed a type-2 fuzzy logic based novel approach in order to solve the pursuing problem of the real-world pursuit-evasion game; "Game of Spheros" with a new experimental setup that is constructed with spherical droids Sphero 2.0 and the BB-8. The game model has been implemented to a bounded game environment with the following specifications; the pursuer is adjusted to be faster than the evader, but at the same time to make it less maneuverable the maximum steering angle of the pursuer is restricted. In the constructed pursuit-evasion game scenario, the evader droid BB-8 is controlled by a human user while the pursuing droid Sphero 2.0 is controlled by the propose type-2 fuzzy logic based pursuing system. The proposed intelligent type-2 fuzzy logic based pursuing system is mainly composed of five components that are the vision based localization, error signal generator, control system, type-2 fuzzy strategy planner and type-1 fuzzy decision making mechanism. The vision based localization mechanism is established with a low cost webcam to localize the droids in the game environment. This feedback information is used by error signal generator to provide the necessary inputs to the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner and type-1 fuzzy decision making mechanism. Type-2 fuzzy strategy planner and type-1 fuzzy decision making mechanism are the key blocks of these intelligent pursuing system since the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner generates the reference trajectories to be followed by the pursuer and type-1 fuzzy decision making mechanism regulates the approaching behavior of the pursuer by regulating the footprint of uncertainty sizes of the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner. In the analysis of the internal structure of the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner, we have analytically derived and presented four novel type-2 fuzzy logic based pursuing strategies which are the aggressive right pursuing strategy, aggressive left pursuing strategy, smooth right pursuing strategy and smooth left pursuing strategy for the pursuit-evasion games through detailed theoretical analyses. Type-2 fuzzy strategy planner has been constructed with single input interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems and it creates pursuing trajectories to be followed by the pursuer with respect to the change of the size of the footprint of uncertainty or the height of the lower membership functions of the interval type-2 fuzzy sets. We can determine the pursuer's approaching behavior and approaching side according to the evader by regulating only one parameter besides generating pursuing trajectories with our proposed type-2 fuzzy strategy planner which can be defined as the superior part of the proposed structure. In other words, the result of this thesis study will show that it is possible to design pursuing strategies linguistically in terms of both the approaching behavior (Aggressive, Smooth) and approaching side (Left or Right) to the evader by simply tuning the footprint of uncertainty sizes of the interval type-2 fuzzy sets. We have also presented the type-1 fuzzy decision making mechanism to regulate type-2 pursuing strategy in an online manner as there is a need to change the pursuing strategy in an intelligent way. Decision making mechanism has been constructed with type-1 fuzzy logic systems based on the expert knowledge. Proposed fuzzy decision making mechanism can be also defined as a self-tuning mechanism for the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner since it regulates the footprint of uncertainty sizes of the antecedent type-2 fuzzy sets of the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner to give the chance of increasing the pursuing performance. The fuzzy decision mechanism tuned pursuing strategy is named as the intelligent pursuing strategy in this thesis. The outcomes of the thesis study will show that the superiority of the proposed intelligent pursuing strategy since fuzzy decision making mechanism provides the advantages of both aggressive and smooth pursuing strategies by regulating the footprint of uncertainty sizes of the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner in an online manner. Finally, in order to validate that the analyses on the linguistic relationships of the interval type-2 fuzzy sets of the footprint of uncertainty and also show that the performances of the proposed structure, we have performed real-world game experiments. Firstly, we will present several experimental results to validate that whether the proposed type-2 fuzzy strategy planner has an interpretable relationship between its footprint of uncertainty size and its output. Then, the pursuing performances of the proposed linguistic pursuing strategies will be also examined against a human user. Comparative experimental results of the type-2 fuzzy logic based pursuing strategies will be presented to show that resulting performances are satisfactory. It will be demonstrated that intelligent pursuing strategy, generated from the type-2 fuzzy strategy planner and fuzzy decision making mechanism structures, improved the pursuing performance as it has the capability to change the employed pursuing strategy in the dynamic pursuit-evasion game against a human controlled evader.

Machine learning techniques for surface electromyography based hand gesture recognition

People use their hand unconsciously to perform many task in daily life. The goal of these tasks can be a physical interaction such as holding, grasping and pushing as well as communication. Hand gestures constitute one of the most popular types of non-verbal communication. People use their hands to give basic messages such as 'stop', 'come', 'like', 'dislike' and 'okay'. Even when texting, we now use hand gesture emojis. Moreover, hearing impaired people use hand gestures as sign language, which means hand gestures can be considered a language on their own. On the other hand, the communication does not take place only between humans, but also between humans and technological devices. Input method of these devices is generally limited with mouse, keyboard, joyistick or touchpad. The human machine interaction studies focus on developing new interfaces to overcome this restriction by simulating a natural ways of communication for humans. Here, the hand gestures arise as an interface for devices. There are various methods for hand gesture detection such as cameras, gloves and electrodes. Visual based solutions provide high recognition rate; however, they face with difficulties like light conditions, skin and background color, spatial position and orientation of the hand and fingers. Also, this kind of systems suffer from range limitations of sight view. Next, glove based systems hold people back from using their hands comfortably and may also cause loss of sensation. Hence, an alternative solution has been by generated electrode based systems. When contracted to perform an action, muscle cells generate an electrical signal. The combination of all innervated muscle cells produces superposed electrical signals called Motor Unit Action Potentials. A technique of recording and studying the myoelectric signal is defined as electromyography (EMG). This thesis mainly proposes a hand gesture recognition system using the electromyography signals of the forearm. The muscle signals can be recorded via needle electrodes or surface electrodes. While needle electrodes are providing signals from a specific muscle group, surface electrodes sense signals that reach the surface of skin. The use of non-invasive electrodes is painless and easy; therefore, they are known as convenient for daily usages and applications. In this work, a commercial product, the Myo Armband has been used as a signal source. The Myo Armband is a wearable and wireless device, which has eight electrodes located circularly around the arm. When a user wears the Myo Armband, the device transmits the measured EMG signal via Bluetooth and the signals can be easily obtained with help of software development kit of device. Hence, it is widely used in researches and applications like prosthetic control, mobile robot navigation, virtual reality projects, game control, sign to speech translation and art works. In this study, the hand gestures of numbers between 0 and 9 in Turkish Sign Language was recorded as a dataset using the Myo Armband. To make a better gesture recognition, the proposed system includes the comparison of four different machine learning algorithms which consist of k-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree, Support Vector Machines and Artificial Neural Network. In machine learning, working with directly raw data increases the complexity of implementation and processing cost. Thus, first, seven time domain features were extracted from each channel of the recorded data. To make the feature matrix simple, Principal Component Analysis was employed, and then the algorithms was fed by resultant feature vector. Before the comparison of algorithms, each algorithm was investigated to find the optimal parameters by changing the values. Firstly, k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm was examined with various number of neighbors and distance metrics. The Decision Tree algorithm was tested for two splitting criteria which are gini diversity index and entropy. The Support Vector Machine algorithm was analyzed with different kernels and binary discrimination methods. Lastly, Artificial Neural Network was investigated by changing the number of neurons in hidden layer, training function and error functions. Then the outcome of this study has obtained with setting the parameters of each classifiers to optimal. According that, Decision Tree algorithim has lowest fscore ratio which was about 0.76. k-Nearest Neighbor and Artificial Neural Network algorithms increased the result to 0.82 and 0.85, respectively. The highest fscore ratio was achieved as 0.87 using the Support Vector Machine algorithm. In addition, the performance of each class has also evaluated, and it was found that the Support Vector Machine algorithm gives the highest ratio for all gestures. Also, gestures of '6', '7', '8' and '9' have higher recognition ratio; whereas, lowest ratio was obtained for class '2'. The achieved results are quite promising that, the usage of muscle signals could employ as hand gesture recognition and the proposed system can be used to interact with machines.

Model predictive contouring control for autonomous ground vehicles

Increment in the car accidents and energy wasted inefficiently makes the field of the autonomous vehicles more attractive for automotive companies such as Tesla, Volvo and Mercedes also attract academic researcher's attention due to competitive structure of the problem of autonomy, because it is open to development and testing of the new and advanced control methods and field of autonomous vehicles has unpredictable problems in its nature. Numerious methods have been proposed for autonomous vehicle control. At the beginning classical methods applied to this problem. But classical methods do not have constraint handling such as keeping the vehicle always on track or not exceeding pre-defined speed in a systematic way and do not have preferable objective achievement such as minimizing the traveling time, minimizing the amount of wasted energy, or maximizing the safety in their nature, so the method used in this field must have constraint handling in a systematic way that is always achievable and objective achievement in an intuitive way by predicting the all possible situations from the model of the vehicle and from the road like human driver does. Briefly, it is appropriate to use model predictive control which is a subtopic of the optimal control theory in autonomous vehicles and in this thesis model predictive control is used to make a car autonomous with capability of constraint handling and with an adjustable objective in an intuitive way such as tuning the weighting factors in the optimization problem. Road information is needed to be able to take the border constraints in account and there should be a path that will be followed by minimizing the positional errors between the vehicle and road or at least there should be a path that defines the progress taken by the vehicle. One of the model predictive control approaches applied into the autonomous vehicles is defining a path that achieves a pre-defined objective such as least curvature, minimum lap time, maximum path accuracy, and then following this path using the controller, so before tracking, 1d path must be planned on 2d road, this is a two-layer approach consists of high level path planner and low level path tracking controller, but the calculation of the optimal path is a hard task due to its non-convex nature. The other model predictive control approach is to make planning and tracking at the same time, this is called one-layer approach and one of them is "model predictive contouring control". In model predictive contouring control approach, first, a path is chosen for only progress indication, then traveled distance of the projection of the vehicle on this pre-chosen path is maximized so even if the vehicle is not onto this path, it completes the lap, this is called progress of the vehicle and as stated it is measured by the projection of the car on the path. Generally, this path defines progress is chosen as center line of the 2d road. At the same time with the progress maximization, the error between the vehicle and its projection which is called contouring error is minimized but projection is itself an optimization problem, the result is optimization in an optimization problem and this is too complex to do in real time. To overcome this issue, projection approximation is used, and this approximated projection of the vehicle on the path is dedicated as a new optimization variable, and called path variable. It is controlled by the virtual input. Approximation is valid only when the longitudinal error between real projection and approximated projection is almost zero, this longitudinal error is called lag error. Path variable and its virtual control variable are added to the optimization problem so that maximization of the progress and the minimization of the contouring and lag errors can be achieved by tuning three weighting factors in an intuitive way. If speed is desired then the weighting on lag error is increased, if the accuracy is more essential then the weighting on contouring error is increased. In order to follow just one known road function in the prediction horizan at time step k, the road is divided into known functions and function areas in which center line of the road is currently followed road function. When the vehicle enters a next road function area, then in the whole prediction horizon, this road function is used as the progress path. The joining these independent road paths is the problem for this thesis, there must be a switching to change the road function. As switching, intersection of the currently followed road and the next road is used. When the vehicle enters the intersection area, it suddenly follows the next road function and kept into the new borders. Intersection area provides switching before projection arrives end point of the currently followed line, and this decrease the possibility of the infeasibilty at the turnings. In summary, effect of the weighting factor in the model predictive control approach and the new proposed intersection area method for turnings are tested in this thesis.

Multilayer mean field differential games in multi-agent systems and an application in intelligent transportation

In this thesis, we describe the results we have obtained on linear-quadratic hierarchical Mean Field Stackelberg differential games with open-loop information structure. We name this new class of games as Mean Field (MF) Multilayer Stackelberg Games (MSG). The model that we have developed consists of three levels of decision making. There is a leader at the top, sub-leaders are at the intermediate level, and followers are at the lowest level. In this structure, Stackelberg Game is played between the leader, sub-leaders and followers in turn. Firstly the leader plays with the sub-leaders and then sub-leaders play with their followers. Consequently, the leader can control the followers not directly, but only through the sub-leaders. The followers are weakly coupled through a Mean Field term, affecting their individual costs. The main novelty in this thesis is to extend the Mean Field Game to multi layer framework. Theoretically, Mean Field Equilibrium arises in the infinite population limit. In our approach, instead of computing the exact Stackelberg equilibrium, the Mean Field equilibrium policies are obtained with the assumption of infinite population. When the population size is sufficiently large, the resulting policy can be regarded as an approximate Stackelberg equilibrium by the law of large numbers, therefore we apply this resulting policy to the original problem in the finite population case. The performance of the developed method is evaluated by a numerical example. In the second part of the thesis, we adapt and apply the developed methodolgy to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for future Smart Cities. So, another important novelty of the thesis is to apply The Mean Field Game Theory to Automated Highway System (AHS), in order to minimize both total consumed energy and travel time. In this model, there is a Control Center which acts as a leader, Road Links in the intermediate level act as sub-leaders and finally Vehicles are followers. The Control Center, Road Links and Vehicles which are in consecutive layers play Mean Field (MF) Multilayer Stackelberg Games (MSG). Although, the Control Center cannot manipulate the Vehicles directly, it imposes its strategy through the Road Links in the intermediary layer. The Vehicles of each Road Link are weakly coupled through a Mean Field term, which affects their individual cost functions. In order to implement this algorithm to ITS, we have developed our highly realistic simulation environment, Istanbul Technical University City Transportation Simulation (ITUCiTSim) program. The effectiveness of the proposed method is justified by simulations performed in ITUCiTSim.

Path defined directed graph vector (pgraph) method for multibody dynamics

The dynamic model of multibody systems plays an important role in a wide range of applications ranging from robotics, vehicle and machine design, computer animations and virtual reality applications. A significant number of studies have been conducted to develop algorithms that allow efficient computation of dynamic models of multibody systems in computer environment. However, fewer studies have been done to develop algorithms to reduce the configuration time of the system to be modeled and to minimize the most possible modeling errors. In the dynamic model of multibody systems, the main objective is to obtain the equation of motion of the system. Reduction of model configuration time is achieved by developing the modeling environments in which parameters including geometric and mass informations related to the system are taken as inputs and the equations of motion are obtained as output. For a system in serial topology, it is enough to take the information of joint degrees of freedom and axes of rotation in addition to geometric and mass informations of the system. For a system in a tree topology or closed kinematic-chain, the parameters that represent the connection between the bodies must also be taken as input. The connections between the bodies can be mathematically expressed by methods based on graph theory. What is important here is to include connections between the bodies into the formulation in such a way that equations of motion of the system can be generated automatically. While equations of motion are obtained, Euler-Lagrange and Newton-Euler based formulations are generally used. In Euler-Lagrange based modeling, while creating the Lagrangian function related to the kinetic and potential energy, the propagation of body velocities must be computed according to the global coordinate frame. On the other hand, in Newton-Euler based modeling, the propagation of body velocities and forces must be computed according to the global coordinate frame. The commonly used method in both approaches is to define the coordinate frames at the joint locations and rotation matrices between this coordinate frames, then computing velocity and forces related to bodies according to the global coordinate frame. From this point of view, for a system in serial topology, the above processes can be done without any graph-based method since the connections between the bodies are uniform. However, graph-based methods are crucial for complex systems involving tree topology or closed kinematic-chain. In the thesis, it is aimed to create a modeling environment which will allow to reduce the modeling errors and configuration time for modeling multibody systems. In this environment, a graph theory based approach which defines the connections between the bodies has been developed and the dynamic model of the systems including tree topology and closed kinematic-chain has been systematically obtained with this approach. Complex multibody systems may include multiple combinations of serial and tree topologies, as well as closed kinematic-chain systems. Simulations of such systems is a costly task not only for run-time but also for construction-time when model description and constraints are introduced. In this thesis, we present a systematic framework of a construction-time efficient modeling methodology for complex multibody systems by introducing path defined directed graph vector (Pgraph) and the associated methodology based on Linear Graph Theory (LGT). This method is especially useful for systems changing topology, such as walking mechanisms where bilateral and unilateral constraints are conditionally embedded. Although this is a general methodology to be combined with many dynamical modeling algorithms available in the literature, here we introduce methodology and applications using Spatial Operator Algebra (SOA) which is a recursive algorithm based on Newton-Euler formalism. We also introduced the implementation of Pgraph method to mostly known Denavit-Hartenberg Convention for updating body coordinate frames. Another focus of this thesis is analyzing external constraint forces, especially computation of unilateral constraint forces in wheeled ground vehicles. Our aim is to get a model to obtain traction forces between the wheels and ground. These forces are important for real time vehicle control systems to prevent the roll over. We developed a model that provides computation of traction forces for wheel dynamics with a modular approach that can be extended for two or more wheeled vehicles. Traction forces are computed by defining the point contact for the situation where the wheels are subjected to no-slip. Frictional forces which are dependent on the characteristic parameters of the road and wheel at the contact point can be included to the system. In this thesis, bicycle dynamics is taken as an example of a two-wheeled vehicle, the traction forces between the ground and the bicycle wheels are computed in the case of different actuating forces applied to a bicycle. Another example that is addressed within the context of ground vehicles is the truck and trailer system. The modeling of a system with both tree topology and many wheels in the developed environment is important to show the potential of the Pgraph method. Visualization of multibody systems in a 3D environment allows us to do better dynamic analysis of multibody systems. Both the 3D CAD drawings and the 3D shapes representing the bodies are supplied as input with Pgraph vector to the model configuration. Pgraph method is enabling the system to be automatically created in the 3D environment. In this thesis, although the "3D Animation Toolbox" which is included in the MATLAB software as an infrastructure for 3D environment is used, the developed algorithm can be integrated into a popular environment such as ROS (Robot Operating System) and so on. The thesis consists of five parts. In the first part, a summary of the existing studies in the literature about modeling multibody systems is given. Besides the aim and the motivation of the thesis are expressed. In the second part, the graphical representation of the systems is introduced, and the Spatial Operator Algebra (SOA) is given with Linear Graph Theory. Then, the Pgraph method is described by applying it to the SOA method. In the third chapter, motion equations under external constraint forces of multibody systems are analyzed. In the fourth chapter, modeling studies and simulation results of the example systems which will provide better understanding of the developed methods and algorithms are given. In the fifth section, the concluding remarks and future works are given.

Design and validation of an autonomous park systemconcept based on customer clinic

Fast growing technology contributes to enrich every branch of industry as well as the automotive industry. The developments through the last decade in automotive industry are remarkable and majority of these automotive innovations featured electronics and software especially at electrification and driver assistance technologies. This leads to equip the vehicles with more electronics systems and convenience features day by day. The latest features are usually offered at first in the higher vehicle segments, and hence large user groups do not experience them. It does not take long until those features can be found in lower segments. This can be observed for automated parking assistance systems and driver assistance features, which are getting close to the autonomous driving. The new automated parking assistance systems are making life easier for drivers to park in tight spots by pressing a button. The driver assistance features are capable of autonomizing the drives up to a certain level without the constant supervision of the driver. By merging the trends in these two feature domains, a new parking assistance feature called Home Area Parking (HAP) is aimed to be designed and validated in this thesis. Firstly, active and passive park aid systems are investigated. Secondly, the autonomous vehicle definition and levels are examined. After that, the concept details defined and storyboard is created for the feature and for the main use cases. The details of each use case are defined in the sub-sections of the storyboard. In order to validate the designed feature, a customer clinic is organized. Preparation and execution steps are explained. The outcome of the clinic is summarized and the results are analyzed. Accordingly, boundary diagram is updated based on the analysis of the results. Finally, conclusions of this study is outlined and recommendations for further improvement are laid out in the last section.

Quantized feedback control of autonomous robots

In this dissertation, a new robot navigation framework is introduced to close thegap between the environment mapping, path planning computations and the vehicle control problem. General approaches for robot navigation deals with the path planning and navigation with the assumption that the control system of the robot can trackthe given reference values of the planners. On the other hand, the control system architecture assumes that the incoming reference signals are suitable for its control range or commonly thresholds the out of range signals. In both situations, these systems act separately from each other, and there is no backwards information passed through these systems. As a result, even the path and motion planner outputs looks like optimal outcomes, if these outputs do not have any compliance with the control system, then the total system behavior is not accomplished as expected. To ensure connection with the planning and control structures and establish a feedback mechanism to the overall system, navigation framework employs the quantization operator both in the environment mapping and in the controller architecture. Using the quantizer in grid segmentation problem leads to a novel approach within occupancy grid literature. By using computer graphics methodologies, an efficient occupancy grid method is derived for assigning the point clouds that are gathered from 3D sensors to the grids. This assignment uses a hybrid approach, which combines the topological and grid space partitioning methods. Geometric properties of the grid voxels are interpreted as quantized spatial information from the environment and used as an input to the motion planner that generates reference signals to the controller side of the robotics system. The first main part of the navigation framework is called as input quantizer. Sensor inputs and the path splines are represented with the independent graph nodes for each axis in the 3D Euclidean space. Space partitioning methodology is executed with a binary segmentation independent for each axis until the corresponding node of the path splines and the obstacle nodes have no intersection. This binary segmentation and its reverse operation are called as zoom-in and zoom-out properties respectively in the study. After the motion planner that shapes the reference signals with using the information from the grid voxels, another main block of the framework is in charge of synthesizing an asymptotically stable controller, which is called output quantizer. As its name suggests, this structure also consists of a quantizer, which is denominated as qLQR.This method is adapted to the proposed framework to satisfy both the stability and the performance concerns.

Bir biyopsi el cihazi tasarimi ve gerçeklemesi

Keywords: biyomedikal, İİAB(İnce İgne Aspirasyon Biyopsisi), Biyopsi El Cihazı Bu tez çalışması kapsamında ince iğne aspirasyon biyopsisinde kullanılmak üzere bir biyopsi el cihazı tasarımı yapılmıştır.

Fuzzy logic based position control system design for nano quadcopter

we will present the design and novel deployment of Fuzzy PID (FPID) controllers to solve the position control of the nano quadcopter Crazyflie 2.0 in a real-world environment. In this way, the existing nano-quadcopter can be adapted to the desired situation. This modification affects the dynamic parameters of the system and causes the control structure to be changed. As a first stage, we have extracted a mathematical model that describes the dynamics of the quadcopter. Comprehensive literature reviews and different methods have been found for these mathematical processes such as Tait-Bryan and Quaternion are two different mathematical models. Tait-Bryan method was chosen for the thesis. Behaviors of Crazyflie 2.0 nano quadcopter like altitude and position controllers are designed in this determined mathematical model. The mathematical model was developed on the basis of quadcopter system dynamics using a linear and nonlinear approach. The rotation and rotation dynamic parameters of the quadcopter system were set. PID control, known as conventional method, is the most commonly used control method in quadcopters. In this context, the design and deployment of a Fuzzy PID (FPID) controller structure has been presented to solve the position control problem in the nano quadcopter used in the thesis. The basis of the FPID control structure is to rely on fuzzy logic foundations. Thanks to the expert knowledge input, the values of the membership functions are determined to the most appropriate points and the desired control structure is created. The testing of this control structure was done by testing on the Crazyflie 2.0 mathematical model created in the computer environment. Thanks to the same test mechanism, the PID coefficients as the traditional method have been determined and tested at the most appropriate values. In this way, a control system for the Crazyflie 2.0 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is intended to be developed. The image detection based camera system has been added to ensure that this improved control system provides accurate and stable feedback. This added camera system is usually presented in an experimental environment where a low-cost camera system is implemented instead of the OptiTrack or VICON camera system used to detect robots like quadcopters. Unlike costly camera systems such as VICON and OptiTrack, this camera system is more suitable for cost and usage. Even only the camera system is not used on the computer so that the low-cost is selected. Such high cost camera systems are exhausting computers in terms of processing load. In this context, a low-cost Logitech C920 camera was used. Next, a fuzzy logic-based position controller structure is presented using the image-based positioning system, followed by Crazyflie 2.0, a low-cost camera. Furthermore, the image processing methods applied to the camera system are built in the open-source Python program structure. Crazyflie 2.0 and other quadcopters are a multi-input multi-output system considering the dynamic structure and control. This shows that there are coupled parameters on the model. Because of these reasons, the use of a low-cost camera may result in feedback uncertainties, the FPID controllers are designed to result in a robust and satisfying control system performance in the presence of noise and the highly coupled Crazyflie 2.0 nonlinearities. Using this camera image processing methods, the Crazyflie 2.0 detects the nano quadcopter's position in pixels for the two experiments, the z-axis was kept constant and only the error signal for the two axes were examined. The other two experiments are reference changes. The z axis is also variable during the reference change. The z-axis, which is the variable, has increased and decreased in a certain height range. This z-axis, which increases or decreases with specific examples, is periodic. In this way, both the PID and FPID can examine the behavior of the same examples. This comparison is made by measuring error performance. For the measurement, both the control structure FPID and the PID 's ISE error values, different reference points and reference trajectory results were collected and compared with each other. In this way, comparative experimental results showing that the obtained performance of the FPID structure is superior at various operating points and showing that it is more robust to noise and nonlinear compared to PID is presented.

Fault tolerant control of a quadrotor UAV

This thesis addresses the problem of sensor and actuator fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) and as a result fault tolerant control (FTC) of an unmanned quadrotor helicopter in the presence of the observation and process noises. To this end a Two-Stage Kalman Filter (TSKF) to detect, isolate and identify faults is used. Sensor faults are assumed to be bias faults and actuator faults are modeled as a loss of effectiveness in the propellers. Also a reference follower controller using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) technique is designed and used to make the system response to follow a desired trajectory.

Time series forecasting via computational intelligence methods

Information technologies have many improvements about data storage and its usage in the last decades and it will have more according to technological breakthroughs. Data storage and data obtaining will be much easier than now after the Internet of Things revolution. This revolution can call as differently according to governed country. It named as Industry 4.0 in Germany, the Factory of the Future in France and Italy and Catapult in United Kingdom. The data explosion will also make the data analysis techniques especially in forecasting more important. A forecast is a prediction of some future things or events. Forecasting is an important problem that link many fields such as economics, industry, environmental sciences and much more. Most of usage, the forecasting involves from the time series data. Many applications of forecasting about the business exploit daily, weekly, monthly or any defined interval of the data. These applications can be listed in the areas such as operations management, marketing, finance and risk management, economics, industrial process control and, demography. These are only a few where forecast is required to make good decisions. The forecast model always aims to represent best estimate of the future value of the variable of interest. As it might be expected, these forecasts are not always accurate. Therefore, there is a definition between estimated and real data values named as forecast error. Eventually, it is a good practice to accompany a forecast with an estimate of the error bounds to represent the interval about how large a forecast error might be expected. Prediction Interval (PI) and Confidence Interval (CI) are the most used ones for representing the errors. The CIs handle with the accuracy of the prediction of the regression while the PIs consider the accuracy with the prediction to the targets values. A PI is constructed from interval bound that covers the future unknown value with a prescribed probability called a confidence level. The availability of PIs allows the decision makers to quantify the level of uncertainty associated with the point forecasts. A relatively wide PI indicates the presence of high level of uncertainties in the underlying system operation. On the other hand, narrow PIs give the decision makers the opportunity to decide more confidently with less chance of confronting an unexpected condition in the future. This useful information can guide the decision makers to avoid the selection of risky actions under uncertain conditions. Thus, the construction of PIs has been a subject of much attention. Thus, different methods haven been proposed for the construction of PIs such as delta technique, Bayesian technique, bootstrap, mean-variance estimation, lower and upper bound estimation method. In this thesis, alternative approach to the error bounds will be represent. Fuzzy linguistic term generation and representation via Fuzzy Logic based Lower and Upper Bound Estimator (FLUBE) based Triangular Fuzzy Number (TFN) is presented to estimate the uncertainty in the forecast. As it can be noticed via the titles, the thesis mainly based on the fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic has been successfully implemented in various engineering areas including control, robotics, image processing, decision-making, estimation and modelling. Therefore, the proposed representation includes two different methodologies which will give the opportunity to the decision maker to quantify the uncertainty of the point forecasts with linguistic terms which might increase the interpretability. Moreover, the proposed approaches will provide valuable information about the accuracy of the forecast by providing a relative membership degree with respect to the target data. The proposed approaches consist of two main phases, the offline FLUBE design and the online TFN generation part as Linguistic Generation and Representation Approach (LinGRA) and Enhanced Linguistic Generation and Representation Approach (ElinGRA). In the context of the thesis, firstly, the time series concept and its analysis methodologies are discussed in addition to the basic information of the forecasting. Time series concept is also a basis of forecasting especially in our daily life's events. Therefore, the components and characteristics of the time series are handled to be a light for the time series analysis. The modelling techniques is the key factor of the forecasting models and the error evaluations of the forecasts. They are handled as concisely to give information as much as needed. Secondly, the error terms obtained from the real data values and the forecast models' outputs are modelled via the fuzzy modelling approach. Thanks to both fuzzy model, the error bounds can shape as nonlinear and nonsymmetrical conversely the classical erro bounds like PI. Furthermore, the forecasting error bounds, fuzzy logic systems, fuzzy time series and fuzzy modelling approaches are introduced as the basis of the proposed linguistic term generation approaches. The methodologies have differences on the determination of the linguistic terms phase that also illustrated as comparatively. Finally, the linguistic forecast generation approaches are used on the several data sets in comparison with conventional PI bounds to prove the efficiency. The methodologies can also follow at the part named as experimental results. Thanks to the membership degree of the proposed linguistic terms, the error evaluation of the forecast can be done with fuzzy numbers. Rather than the classical PIs, the proposed bounds utilize the realized value of the project not only bound-in or out consideration but also grading the forecast via the triangular fuzzy numbers. Therefore, the decision can have the opportunities to critize the last forecasts and their methods.

Reliability analysis of electronic boards: analyzing of field return data and the impact of varistor degradation

The rapid developments in electronics, especially in the last decade, have initiated the inception of electronics reliability. Manufacturers such as public utilities like white appliances, the airline and the military are conscious of the costs of unreliability. They usually suffer high costs of failure under warranty. Field return data or warranty data can be used for variety of purposes that include the prediction of future claims, the estimation of field reliability, and the identification of opportunities for quality and reliability improvement. Filed return data sometimes gives us valued information about most failed components during their usage in the field. By examining the cause of failure for a specific components reported on the filed return data, designers and reliability engineers can have a superior vision about reliability of that component and whole system. However, the problem is usually these data are not well recorded. In reality, field return data contains errors corresponding to improper, correlated, incomplete, and poorly collected data that result in misleading reliability predictions. Very few literatures concerning the impact of improper filed return data analyzing and consequently prediction of electronic cards reliability. The first part of this study presents filtering and modeling based on probabilistic distribution function. We propose a new technique to eliminate improper data, correlated to incomplete and poorly collected data, from the whole field return data. In the second step of modeling, we use the filtered data to develop our reliability model. Rather than conventionally using a single distribution for all service times that does not accurately model the substantial changes of the electronic boards reliability performance over time, we use different distributions for different service time intervals. In order to determine the distributions we propose a technique that deals with forward and backward time analysis of the data. One of the most field reported data was for varistior and related failures. ZnO varistors have been widely used in electrical and electronics systems against overvoltage surges for their high nonlinear electrical properties (non-Ohmic current-voltage characteristics) and excellent energy handling capabilities. Choosing an appropriate varistor plays an important role in system safety and reliability. If ZnO varistors are used within their well-defined specifications, degradation due to the environment is not likely. ZnO varistors in-use are usually subjected to a long-term AC or DC voltage stress and surge which may lead to degradation of the varistors with an increase of the varistor clamping voltage Vv. This is called ageing phenomenon and will eventually make the varistors degraded and even thermally broken down or destructed. Degraded varistors affect system reliability and safety. Based on studies on varistor degradation, researchers have argued that the impact of varistor degradation in reliability of electronics is following one-failure mechanisms, which is dependent on increasing of lekage current or decreasing in Vv parameter. However, due to the lack of experimental results and the complexity of varistor structure, the argument decreasing leakage current that results in an increase of Vv, is totally disregarded. Very few papers concerning the impact of different degradation of varistor can be found in the literature. Further, most of these studies perform a specific test on the varistor degradation without considering its relationship with the system where the varistor is placed. In practice, commercial varistor are used as a sample for degradation in experiments. In this research, varistor samples were as same as the real field used application of white appliances. Accelerated degradation tests are applied for different AC current levels; then voltage values are measured. Different from the common practice in the literature that considers a degradation with only decreasing Vv values, we demonstrate either an increasing or a decreasing trend in the Vv parameter. The tests show us a decreasing trend in Vv for current levels above a certain threshold and an increasing trend for current levels below this threshold. We find a threshold value to determine the border of moderate and heavy overvoltages. We simulated the related circuit in SPICE software for different analysis and different overvoltage types. As a conclusion from simulation results, we observed that as a ZnO varistor degrading (Vv parameter increasing), the related system capability to handle the overvoltage is decreasing. It means that, if we consider a typical overvoltage type for a specific environment, the designed circuit maybe stand against this overvoltage, but in case of the degradation the failing is possible. Considering both of these degradation mechanisms, we present a mathematical degradation model. The proposed model exploits physics of the degradations for a single grain boundary that is the core structure of ZnO varistors. To validate the proposed model, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and the results are compared with those obtained from accelerated AC tests. At the end as a summary of this study, we introduce a conceptual accelerated AC test methodology to analyze the reliability of a new ZnO varistor.

Support vector regression based controller design methods for nonlinear systems

Conventional nonadaptive controllers may be convenient enough for most industrial processes in the case that the system does not include highly nonlinear and time varying dynamics. Depending on the developments in technology and increasing requirements of the people, systems are transforming into more and more complex structures. Nonadaptive controllers cannot counteract the tracking error in case the behaviour of the system changes perceptibly owing to internal or external factors during the course of operation and the control performance degrades. For this purpose, different controllers for different scenario conditions and operating points may be designed to resume successful control in industry. Controller design depending on different performance criteria is a momentous task since effective design of controllers can significantly reduce the costs in industry. However, that chore can also be automatically executed by an adaptive controller. Therefore, controllers that are able to adapt themselves according to varying system dynamics must be developed using optimization theory based solutions to enhance the success of the controllers in industry. Adaptive controllers can generally be classified as model based adaptive controllers and model free adaptive controllers. Model based adaptive controllers utilize the system model to approximate the behaviour of the system dynamics whereas in model free adaptive controllers the adjustment mechanism does not need the model of the system. The performances of model based adaptive controllers are directly influenced by the accuracy of the system model. Machine learning algorithms have frequently been utilized to identify the dynamical behaviour of the system precisely in order to derive effective adjustment rules for the parameters of adaptive controllers. Support Vector Regression (SVR), proposed by Vladimir Vapnik et al., is one of the most favorable nonlinear system identification methods since it guarantees the global extremum of the optimization problem. Various adaptive controllers based on SVR have been proposed for the control of nonlinear systems in technical literature. The common property of these studies is that SVR is typically deployed to approximate the system Jacobian which is required to tune parameters of adaptive controllers through gradient based optimization algorithms. In this thesis, three novel adaptive controller architectures based on SVR have been proposed. The basic novelty in these architectures is that SVR has been implemented directly as a controller and a parameter estimator for a generalized controller structure. The performance evaluations of the proposed controllers have been examined on various nonlinear benchmark systems by simulations. In addition, stability analysis of the systems have been performed. The obtained results prove that the proposed adjustment mechanisms are effective in controlling processes with nonlinear dynamics, noise and uncertainties.

Development of inertial navigation system with applications to airborne collision avoidance

Last years, the market growth of UAV is increasing day by day. This market growth is not just for some typical applications, but also application areas are increasing, too. This demand also increases the market value of the UAV. For competition in the market, UAV companies try to develop UAVs more efficient, cost effective and adding different capabilities. However, this growth generates some dangerous situations, moreover, because of the growth in application area, common UAVs are become not enough for applications or missions. In this thesis, I present and demostrate INS-AHRS Design and also Flight Management System with Collision Avoidance for UAV. These algorithms and demonstrations are made by the funding of ITU Control and Avionics Laboratory. In Laboratory, we already have autopilot system for multi-copter platforms and fixed-wing platforms. Before development of this INS-AHRS, we used other products from industry. But these products do not let you manage all system. But with the growth on the UAV applications, in the world also even in our laboratory, many projects required to solve specific problems with UAV. Industry products are designed for just one specific platform which may not be work on another platform. That is the main reason of necessity to develop new INS-AHRS, which can be used for multi-copter platforms. To develop INS-AHRS, filtering techniques and other conversation equations are studied. In this study, it is decided to use one IMU and one GPS. But after encounter with different problems, external magnetometer is added to the system. Then, as datasheet recommended, scaling and also alignment and offset shifting is studied. Before developing the all system, for inner loop, controller all need is attitude and attitude rate feed back. So first, with complimentary filter, gyroscope and accelerometer filtering is developed and tried to test at outside. In simulation, decision of coefficient of complimentary filter is easy to find. But these coefficients do not work at the outside. This shows the most important challenge that simulation platform can never be the same with outside real flight. For INS design, inertial frame to NWU frame conversation is developed. Accelerometers gravity vector and Coriolis vector is removed. Gyroscope outputs are also converted to the NWU frame. At least, all sensor outputs become the type of navigation frame. Whenever all datas gathered are become the type of the same frame, kalman filter is designed for INS. AS a result of INS-AHRS design, after 6 months of testing with other industrial INS, final coefficient of both INS and AHRS is decided. After few more development, test videos are recorded. For the growth of the UAV problem, this thesis presents Flight Management System (FMS) with multi-level autonomy modes that meet the requirements of future flight operations for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). It is envisioned that the future of airspace will become highly heterogeneous and integrate non-standardized aerial systems. In that case, only ground systems will be able to predict future trajectories based on performance models (stored in huge parametric databases). Meanwhile, airborne systems are required to share information. The proposed FMS structure integrates new functionalities such as (1) formal intent and information exchange and collaboration in tactical planning utilizing air-to-air and air-to-ground data links and (2) decentralized, short-term collision detection and avoidance. The air-to-ground data link enables intent sharing and allows field operators (i.e., flight operators or air traffic controllers) to interpret, modify, or re-plan UAS flight intent. The onboard FMS persistently monitors the airspace, tracks potential collisions with the other aircraft and the terrain, and requests re-planning when it detects a possible issue. When an immediate response is needed, the onboard FMS generates a 3D evasive maneuver and executes it autonomously. Flight traffic information is obtained from ADS-B/In transponders and air-to-air data links. ADSB-In/Out implementations make the unmanned systems more visible to the systems in 3D. In addition, the air-to-air data links enable intent sharing between airborne systems and are traceable in four dimensions (i.e., space and time). The experimental FMS was deployed in quadrotor UASs and a ground station and GUI was designed to perform demonstrations and field experiments for the issues introduced in the paper.

Improved performance for SLAM techniques using TRAP configured 2D LRFs

The issue covered in this thesis can be evaluated in two stages. In the first part of this work, some of the 2D laser range finder (LRF) based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques available in Robot Operating System (ROS) have been discussed and compared with each other. These methods, which distinct differences from each other, are compared according to their advantages and disadvantages. These comparisons have been realized first in simulation environments, after then these comparisons have been done in real time experimental environment. There are two major reasons for working in a simulated environment. Among these, the battery consumption and charging problem which is the energy problem is the first reason. In real-time applications on the system, the battery drained within approximately one hour and recharged within five to six hours. This situation caused to a slowdown in the studies. It took at least six hours to wait for about an hour of work. In order to remove this problem, working in simulation environment has been preferred to solve the constraint in time. Another reason for the preference of the simulation environment is to avoid from possible damages of the equipments in any fault in the codes. In the simulation, crashing against the walls or obstacles do not damage the real system. The second objection is a hardware innovation which was proposed and the effects of this innovation were discussed. The improvement offered is a structure related with 2D LRF position configuration. In a traditionally configuration, a single 2D laser sensor is positioned at the front of the vehicle centered. In this existing structure, the mobile robot does not scan every point around itself totally, and blind spots have been occurred around the robot. However, in the proposed new 2D LRF position configuration, it is possible to perceive every point around 360° without any blind spot. This structure have been named as Transversal Positioned and is represented by TRAP. Two 2D laser sensors have been applied in the TRAP configuration and the sensors are placed at angles of 45° on the diagonal line of the mobile robot and the backs of the LRFs are facing each other. In this way, it was provided to detect everything around the vehicle without a blind spot. In the same way, the traditional structure and the TRAP structure are compared in terms of the predetermined criteria, additionally their advantages and disadvantages have been examined. ROS has been used in both real time environment and simulated environment. There are certain reasons why ROS has been chosen. One of the main reason for this selection is being an open source and freeware. Another factor is that being used by many researchers who work in academic, industrial and personal research area of robotics. Another reason for the preference of the ROS platform is the ease in which the simulation work is delivered in real time. Under normal circumstances it can be quite challenging to introduce a new hardware into the system and start using it. Considering the advantages provided by ROS, it is much easier to attach a new equipment to a platform and start to use the data from the attached equipment. It is not necessary to write code snippets separately for each piece of hardware. The existing code snippets are shared with all users because the platform is open source. The users need only change the parameters in the code fragment in the direction of the request and quickly start to introduce the hardware to the system and start to receive data. This simplicity allows the users to spent their time on code algorithm development rather than hardware attachment. One of the biggest reasons why ROS is preferred is that the codes developed for the simulation environment can be applied directly to the real-time system with minor modifications. The main focus of the thesis is the SLAM problem, which is often sought in the robotics literature. In order to be able to grasp this problem correctly, firstly, uncertainties in robotics were explained. These disclosures include filter structures used in this area, modeling mobile robot movements and sensor modeling. After the uncertainties in the field of robotics were expressed, explanations were given on localization and mapping issues. Explanations were made on what the localization and mapping problems are in the robotic research area, and what approaches are being sought. In order to understand the SLAM problem, it is necessary to understand the localization and mapping problems. The reason of that is because in SLAM these two problems have been followed simultaneously by each other. In the following, the definition of the SLAM problem is defined and information about what it is also given. ROS-compatible 2D laser sensor based SLAM methods were studied and investigated. While experimenting with SLAM techniques available in ROS three environment scenarios have been created to be compatible with the studies. These scenarios vary depending on the complexity of the environment according to the number and type of obstacles. Depending on the complexity of the environment, it is possible to name these scenarios as easy, medium and difficult, respectively. These scenarios with different difficulty levels have been proposed in order to make the comparison of SLAM methods available in ROS as fair and detailed as possible. It has been analyzed how behaviors changed in different environments. The first scenario was designed as an empty corridor consisting of only walls without any obstacles in the environment. This scenario can also be called a simple scenario. In the second scenario some static obstacles were added and the environment was tried to be more complicated. This scenario can be called the average scenario. Finally, more stable obstacles have been added than the previous one, and with this, not only are the obstacles with moving motions added. The final scenario can also be called a difficult scenario. In order to be able to perform a fair evaluation, the scenarios are fixed for each different SLAM structure, ie no changes are applied and the situation is adapted to the moving obstacles. It has also been noted that in all cases the vehicle starts at the same starting point and determines the same ending point as the target itself. Experimental studies have been carried out in accordance with these criteria. A similar comparison was made about the 2D laser sensors placed in the TRAP structure with the conventional 2D laser sensor construction. In this comparison, the same scenarios as the previous scenarios were used, and the starting points and the ending points were considered to be identical. In the third scenario, including the dynamical obstacles, the difference between the TRAP and the traditional structure was clearly visible. In a conventional 2D laser sensor structure, when a moving obstacle has been detected in the environment, the running algorithm can not directly understand whether it is a dynamical obstacle or not. Although in the algorithm in which the sensor has perceived an obstacle, this perceived structure may also be the result of a slip on the map. In situations like this the mobile robot needs additional data in order to understand what is perceived to be an obstacle or a slip on the map. In order to collect these additional data, the vehicle must rotate several times around its axis and the necessary data will be obtained as a result of these rotations. If the mobile robot encounters a moving obstacle again after it starts to move, it needs to rotate around its own axis again and get additional data. This requirement also extends the completion of the task. When the same experiment is repeated with the equipment for which the TRAP structure has been applied, the need to rotate the vehicle around its axis has been removed or reduced as far as possible. This has greatly reduced the completion time of the task. In addition, the faster completion of the algorithm also reduces the amount of battery used, thus providing a longer usage time.

Demiryolu sistemlerine duyulan ihtiyaç dünyanın her bölgesinde gün geçtikçe artmaktadır.

Combination of MCL and ICP methods for accurate indoor localization

Nowadays, mobile robots that are widely used in the industry are moving on pre-planned paths. These paths are prepared using wires, magnetic tapes or any other methods that allow the robot to follow the path. However, using these paths restricts the movement of the robot. This is because when it is necessary to change the target locations of the robot in the factory, the paths have to be prepared from the very beginning in accordance with the new task of the robot. Doing this will cause extra cost and time loss. For these reasons, mobile robots used in the industry need to reach the target without any help, instead of moving on predetermined paths as they go to the target position. In order to do this, they need to know their current pose. In this thesis, the localization study for indoor mobile robots that are used in the industry was performed in the simulation environment by using a two-step indoor localization method. In the first step of the localization method, the pose of the robot was roughly estimated and then its pose was roughly tracked in a known environment by using the Monte Carlo Localization algorithm. In the second step, when the robot was close to a predetermined target point, the instantaneous pose of the robot was accurately estimated by using a variant of ICP algorithm.

An internal model control based tuning method for single input fuzzy PID controller

The first goal of control engineering is to analyze and process the knowledge of how a process can be controlled. However, with this structured control mechanism, reliable and accurate results can be obtained on processes that require high performance. Fuzzy control is a practical alternative for a variety of challenging control applications since it provides a convenient method for constructing nonlinear controllers via the use of heuristic information. Regardless of where the heuristic control knowledge comes from, fuzzy control provides a user-friendly formalism for representing and implementing the ideas we have about how to achieve high-performance control. Conventional proportional-integral-derivative (CPID) controllers may not perform well for the complex process, such as the high-order and time delay systems. Under this complex environment, it is well-known that the fuzzy controller can have a better performance due to its inherent robustness. Thus, over the past three decades, fuzzy controllers, especially, fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (FPID) controllers have been widely used for industrial processes. Because their heuristic natures associated with simplicity and effectiveness for both linear and nonlinear systems. Even though industry shows growing interest in the applications of FPID, the tuning mechanism of scaling factors (SFs) and the stability analysis are still difficult tasks due to the complexity of the nonlinear control surface that is generated by FPID controllers. In literature, several studies have been presented where the design of the two input FPID (CFPID) controllers have been investigated. Because of the number of the design parameters of CFPID is relatively big, the systematic design is still a challenging problem. Besides of that the majority of the research focus on the two-input structures, it has been shown in various works that single input FPID (SFPID) provide greater flexibility and better functional properties. In the SFPID controller structure a new called "signed distance" variable is used as input signal. In this way, the number of rules and membership functions (MFs) is less than CFPID while both of the controllers have almost same control performance as showed in this thesis. This feature brings design simplicity to SFPID controller. There are several design methods in literature for tuning design parameters of controller. One of the most common used is internal model control based tuning method. Having a single parameter dependent to the close-loop time constant is effective for commanly used. In this thesis, firstly, a brief information will given about CPID controller and internal model control (IMC) based tuning method. Than, the CFPID structure will be analyzied in detail. By extraction the rules and MFs, the relationship between inputoutput of controller will shown. Present the an analytical tuning method based on IMC to tune SFPID controllers will proposed in this thesis. First, reduction process from CFPID structure to SFPID structure will be explaned. By examining the relationship between input-output and MFs, in order to design the desired control structure, the design rule template will be presented about how to set the membership function parameters. As a result of all the work done, it was said that, SFPID controller can be expressed as a linear proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller plus a nonlinear compensation item. So, it is acceptable the IMC based tuning method is applicable to SFPID controller and the formulations for tuning process will be presented. Finally, by simulation studies it will be shown that the SFPID is capable to improve the transient state performance while providing an identical disturbance rejection performance of the CFPID structure.

Slip-slide control system for railway vehicles

In railway transportation, braking and traction forces mainly depend on normal force and adhesion coefficient between wheel and rail. Regarding the restrictions on controlling normal force, maximization of adhesion coefficient seems to be the only way of increasing braking and tractive efforts. Moreover, efficient utilization of adhesion can also reduce operating costs with avoiding early wheel and rail damages and minimizing trip time. On the other hand, adhesion between the rail and the wheel is a highly dynamic function of many parameters such as environmental conditions, speed and slip ratio. The aim of this thesis is construction of a slip - slide control scheme which maximizes adhesion utilization in addition to avoid excessive situations resulting in component failures. Two different control approaches are proposed in the scope of this thesis. The first method relies on an Event Based Slip - Slide Control Scheme. In this approach, the excessive slip - slide situations are detected with wheel acceleration information which is derived from the measured wheel speed. If the wheel acceleration is higher than the predefined threshold that is chosen considering the maximum possible/permissible acceleration/deceleration of the vehicle, the controller takes action and decreases the magnitude of the reference motor torque in order to return the adhesion status back to the micro - slip area. During such a recovery mode, the phase shift between the input and the output of the traction system is observed using the orthogonal correlation method to accelerate the proposed control strategy by determining the adhesion status in advance. Then, the controller tries to maximize adhesion utilization by holding the phase shift value between the predefined upper and lower limits. Finally, the control action is terminated as soon as the braking/tractive effort fulfills the driver request due to recuperation on road conditions. The developed Event Based Slip - Slide Control Method forms the desired phase shift area with constant borders (upper and lower limits) for all possible vehicle velocities. Although the optimal lower limit of the desired phase shift area does not show any noticeable change with the varying vehicle velocity, using a constant value for the upper limit restricts the performance of the slip - slide control system since the adhesion formation process is largely affected by the vehicle velocity. The second slip - slide control system proposed in the scope of this thesis is an alternative form of the Event Based Slip - Slide Control System which uses adaptive upper limit for the desired phase shift area with respect to the vehicle velocity in order to improve adhesion utilization. Two different benchmark approaches which are Disturbance Observer Based Control and Direct PD Control of Phase Shift are tested with the proposed methods under different driving scenarios and adhesion conditions. The adhesion utilization of an Optimal Controller which has an access to both accurate vehicle velocity and friction coefficient is used as a reference performance criterion. The test results show that both the proposed Adaptive and Event Based Slip - Slide Control Systems provide rapid response to quickly changing adhesion conditions and driver requests while maximizing the braking/tractive effort even in poor adhesion conditions. In addition to their better performances in adhesion utilization, the proposed control schemes do not need the calculated wheel acceleration during the control phase and the possible stability problem of the Disturbance Observer Based Controller is prevented. What is more, the proposed controllers react extremely fast to the recuperated road conditions unlike the Disturbance Observer Based Controller, since the adhesion status is continuously estimated during the control phase using the observed phase shift information. Last but not least, the proposed approaches do not necessitate the persistent stimulation of the traction system as it is needed in the Direct Phase Shift Control method which might cause early damages in the traction system components. However, it is also shown that the adaptive form of the proposed method increases the adhesion utilization compared to the conventional one by using the phase shift information more efficiently.

Simulation based tool for error propagation analysis of simulink models

Safety is a growing demand for all types of today's systems. Whether it is a nuclear or a transportation system, reliability and safety are the most urgent needs for the design of the entire system. Engineers have developed different standards and models to ensure the desired function of the system without any human life or material loss. All these safety and economy related issues make the topic "model-based error detection analysis" an important and interesting topic for different areas of engineering. This growing demand makes it compulsory for the companies in the industry to form dedicated departments just for the safety assessment and certification. Different types of methods and standards have been developed to calculate the reliability of such safety-critical systems. Various safety standards for various fields are also given by examples in the thesis. These methods can be qualitative or quantitative depending on the type of the system. Analyzes of these safety-critical systems require time and careful work by the designers and testers. As it is necessary to fulfill some criteria based on reliability, engineers developed methods such as fault tree analysis, failure mode and effect analysis, and hazard analysis. To validate the analytical results, a simulation-based approach is introduced in this thesis. After giving background information and mathematical models for the analytical approach, the benefits of a simulation-based approach and its difference from the analytical methods are explained. Simulation-based approach is developed for the environment of MATLAB Simulink, by implementing different types of faults and fault injection methods. These fault types are classified as the sub-elements of the general fault definitions such as sensor faults, hardware faults, and network faults. Every fault type can be injected by using a different method that consists the parameters of occurrence rates and the duration of the fault effect. The correct values that are used for the comparison by the tool are obtained through a fault-free run. The comparison of the faulty run values and the fault-free run values provides important information about the reliability and the performance of the system. In the next phase, the methodology to obtain these reliability and performance metrics are explained along with the features offered to the user by ErrorSim. How to use these features and how to interpret the results obtained by these features are introduced by explanatory examples. Apart from safety-related issues, the architecture of the developed tool is described. It gives the user an insight into the main algorithm which is behind fault injection and error detection. It is important for the user to know the listeners call-back functions and a few technical details for the correct usage of the tool. Results of the simulation are studied in different perspectives in order to show that the tool that is developed can also illustrate performance-related issues in control systems. Two different case studies are taken into consideration for the interpretation of the tool application results. In the conclusion section, the achievements and benefits of ErrorSim are discussed. The general usage of ErrorSim and its importance is explained. Possible improvements on ErrorSim and future works are also discussed.

Tracking control methodologies for a quadrotor UAV

This thesis deals with the problem of designing linear and nonlinear controllers for unmanned quadrotor system stabilization and path tracking. Highly nonlinear and strongly coupling structure of quadrotor makes "Inverse Optimal Control (IOC)" a suitable method for the quadrotor nonlinear position and attitude control. This method is applied to the quadrator using a discrete-time nonlinear affine system model. PID controllers and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) are also applied the system as wellknown linear control strategies. All control methods used in the thesis are compared with each other on a highly nonlinear quadrotor model. Firstly, a highly nonlinear system model with both rigid body dynamics and aerodynamics is introduced. This nonlinear model of quadrotor is linearized around an equilibrium point which is hovering. This linearized model of the quadrotor is represented in state space in order to design LQR for altitude and attitude tracking of the quadrator. In this thesis, IOC also known as Inverse Reinforcement Learning (ILR) formulation is used to solve the reference tracking problem relying on the use of control lyapunov function (CLF) in the establishment of the control law for discrete-time nonlinear quadrotor system. Inverse optimal control approach is beneficial when compared to traditional nonlinear optimal control approach because IOC approach does not bring heavy computational burden as there is no need to solve Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. At first, a stabilizing feedback control law is constructed such that Control Lyapunov Function (CLF) is known a priori. After this stability examination and determination of a meaningful cost functional, this respective cost functional is optimized. Then, a matrix which will minimize a tracking error function is searched by using PSO algorithm. Apart from trajectory error consideration, the control effort limitations based on not exceeding the actuation force limits were also taken into account. While using linear controllers in a nonlinear system, the influence of saturation limits of the actuator are obvious in the output. The inability of the quadrotor especially in following attitude commands is one of the drawbacks of using a linear controllers. The limitations of control effort that are considered during closed loop operation are brought by means of a penalty factor in the cost function only if control inputs go beyond the allowable minimum or maximum values. Subsequently, in the light of all comparative results of different controllers (proportional integral derivative, linear quadratic regulator, nonlinear method), it seems there is a variety of design specifications which require specific execution strategies. The strongest advantage of nonlinear controller design is that it gives the best possible results by enhancing performance based on parameter optimization using evolutionary algorithm. Finally, three different control approaches have been compared in this thesis. The feasibility and effectiveness of designed controllers has been verified based upon dynamic performance of the system as demonstrated in simulation results.

Stability analysis of multiple time-delay systems and design of time-delay filters

Time-delay is a common and important fact seen in biological, chemical and physical processes or in engineering systems. Systems which has the dynamics dependent not just on its states at a certain time, but as well on its states at previous times, are called as time-delay systems. Time-delay determines the lag in time for a previous state value to effect the present state. Besides arising in natural dynamics of the systems, time-delays may be inserted in control design of some engineering systems to stabilize systems or to achieve relatively easy implementation and good performance. The major contributions of this dissertation are in two main directions: one in stability analysis of time-delay systems and one in utilization of delay phenomena for control purposes of flexible systems. In the first direction, a new method providing necessary and sufficient conditions to test delay-independent stability for general linear time invariant systems with constant delays is proposed. The method is utilized for systems with single delay, and more importantly for incommensurate multiple delay systems. The proposed method offers an approach to determine the exact boundaries of unknown parameters such as controller gains or system parameters ensuring delay-independent stability, as well as exhibiting an efficient test for real parameters. The technique is based on non-existence of unitary complex zeros of an auxiliary characteristic polynomial obtained via extended Kronecker summation. A special feature of the polynomial, i.e. self-inversive property, is proved and utilized to check its unitary zeros to determine delay-independent stability by an efficient zero location test. The methodology is executed employing simple algebraic operations and inspection of the number of sign variations in the obtained sequence. For single delay case, the procedure does not require parameter (or frequency) sweeping, equation solving and point-wise testing even for determination of the delay-independent stabilizing regions of unknown parameters. In case of systems with $p$ multiple delays, ($p-2$) agent parameters in the range $[0,2\pi]$ and one parameter in $[0,\pi]$ are swept to determine delay-independent stability without requirement of solving equations. A graphical projection approach for multiple delays is proposed in case unknown parameters exist. The complete delay-independent stability analysis of a second order PD-controlled system with single delay is presented executing the proposed method. Also, the method is applied to find the exact delay-independent stabilizing regions of unknown parameters of systems with two and three delays. Next to the contributions for delay-independent stability analysis, using the symmetry feature resulting from the self-inversive property of auxiliary characteristic polynomial and the efficiency of utilized zero location test, a well-known procedure (Cluster Treatment of Characteristic Roots) for delay-dependent stability analysis of multiple time-delay systems is improved. Actually, the computational load in numerical procedure is reduced by proposing an partial analytical approach to determine stable regions in delay parameter space. The achieved improvement is demonstrated by applying the new procedure to a system with three delays, which was analyzed before. Moreover, the proposed method is performed to obtain the stable regions in delay space to assure safe distance in the train following problem with multiple delays, where the delays arise up to data transfer in communication between the trains and the wayside control unit. In the second direction, as a delay based control technique, the design of time-delay filters to pre-compensate oscillatory modes of flexible systems is dealt with. In particular, we focus on the parametrization of well-known time-delay filters, which are referred in the literature as command smoothing profiles (smoothers) and input shapers, with distributed delays. These smoothers and shapers can readily be parametrized by analytical formulation if the oscillatory mode is undamped. However, the parametrization requires inherently the numerical solution of related equations (usually with an optimization procedure) for the damped oscillatory modes. To overcome this issue, we modify the structure of the filters by utilizing a straightforward complex domain transformation and a compulsory gain compensation, which enables the closed-form parametrization for the damped case. The reference and the system output signals settle without vibration preserving the time lengths of the pre-forms for the undamped case, when the modified filtering structures are applied to the reference. The transformation with the gain compensation is performed on Trapezoidal, S-curve and Trigonometric smoothers, Jerk Limited shaper, and Distributed-delay Zero Vibration shaper which was proposed recently. Then, we examine the obtained new types of smoothers and shapers with exponential distribution of delays in essence, in time and frequency domain. Consequently, the basic properties such as performance of the responses, spectrum distribution and robustness analysis, are confirmed and cross-compared in a case study example. In addition to these, the proposed new shaper with lumped and exponentially weighted delay distribution is considered in the feedback architecture with its inverse form, for vibration suppression of flexible systems controlled with magnitude saturated actuators. It is shown that such distributed-delay shapers with the inverse form in the feedback path have the capability of canceling the undesired vibration caused by saturation limit of actuators. The main idea is to treat the saturation effect as a disturbance on the control input of the actuator which can be canceled by the shapers in the feedback control loop. The theoretical results are compared with an existing solution and verified on a laboratory set-up.

Head gesture recognition for a semi-autonomous powerchair

The author had been involved in a project, where a semi-autonomous powerchair which has obstacle avoidance system for the paraplegic who can not use their hands properly, have been developed. In the project, the author was tasked to design a head gesture recognition system which would allow the end user to convey control commands to the chair so that he can have full autonomy. There are many different ways to communicate with a machine from using sound to using flexing of a muscle which is, by the way, this is how Stephen Hawking interacts with his chair. Ultimately, an inertial measurement unit has been chosen for the project. There are two simple reasons for this selection. One of which is that inferring intend of the user from the head orientation is very basic. For example, if the end user is leaning his head forward, that probably means "go forward", on the other hand; if he is leaning his head left, this probably means "turn left". The second reason is that the sensor needed for the task is affordable and easy to find. Design choices such as this, help to make the chair a low cost alternative to commercially available traditional powerchairs which require further engineering that is specific to the person who can not control it manually. For example, Stephen Hawking uses a specific muscle in his face to interact with his chair, which is impractical for others who can use their other limbs. One may ask that why a semi-autonomous powerchair that uses head orientation as direction command, also needs a gesture recognition system. The answer may not be very obvious. However, there is a reason behind it. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the end user needs full autonomy. For example; the user may want to cross a road. But the chaotic nature of crossing a road with a group of people, whose behaviour could not be easily predicted, may lead the chair's obstacle avoidance system to behave chaotically too. The chair may avoid humans towards an incoming car. Therefore, the user should be able to suspend the obstacle avoidance system. Or the user may be talking to his friends, and the chair may interpret one of his nods as a "go forward" command which may cause injuries or worse. Therefore, the user should also be able to prevent chair from listening to directional commands. For reasons as such, the semi-autonomous chair needs ways of communicating the intention of the user. This is achieved via head gesture recognition in the project. There are many methods for gesture recognition in the literature. However, all wrap around several ideas which are data collection, feature extraction and decision making. All of these ideas are detailed in the chapters. However it is worth noting that most of the publications are about feature extraction. The author suspects that one of the reasons for this difference in the number of publications between the three in gesture recognition relate to the recent advancements of the computing technology where signal processing gained relative importance and it advanced relatively more rapidly due to the need created by consumers. Consequently, there exist more mathematical tools for feature extraction, compared to the number of tools available for the other two. Three different method have been studied in the thesis. These methods are named as; "Fast Fourier Transform as a Feature Extraction Method", "Head Gesture Recognition via DTW and Threshold Optimization", "Gesture Recognition via Neural Network". The first method failed at recognition task. The focus of the second method was directed towards decision making of the gesture recognition algorithm, reasons for which are discussed in detail. As a result of our studies, a method has been proposed for recognition algorithms where dynamic time warping is used for signal comparisons, to increase the recognition rate via threshold optimization. Even though the method has been developed to be used with dynamic time warping, the intuitive idea behind the method for threshold optimization which comes from geometry, can be extended to other gesture or pattern recognition problems. In the proposed method, the optimization algorithm used was genetic algorithm. But anyone who is interested in replicating or implementing the work can use any other meta-heuristic optimization algorithm to optimize the thresholds. The thresholds found through the method, which are calculated/optimized with very simple geometric shapes, have achieved, on average, success rate of 85% which means that more than eight out of ten repetitions of gestures are recognised successfully. Nonetheless, it is important to understand that this modest success rate can be easily increased towards 100% (if not 100%) by using more complex polygons for optimization. The third and the last method have achieved around 97% success rate, however this success rate means there is a possibility of switching the mode of the chair from semi-autonomous to manual without the intention of the user.

Design and implementation of a torque-based predictive steering assistance for human-centered and safe automated driving

Road traffic deaths continue to be a major global public-safety and health problem. According to the report ofWorld Health Organization (WHO), globally more than 1.24 million people die every year due to road traffic crashes on the other hand between 20 to 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries and disabilities. The automotive industry and researchers have focused on developing the vehicle safety systems in order to mitigate the severity of injuries and even to avoid the collisions either by issuing warning signals or intervening the vehicle dynamics. With the advances in sensor, actuator and computing technologies, the automation is introduced in vehicle control through systems such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) which are proven to increase vehicle safety and efficiency. Although the human errors are the ultimate cause of the collisions, the humans are reluctant to give a complete authority to an automated driving technology because of the reliability issues. In order to support the drivers in such demanding tasks, the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are designed to provide various functionalities while keeping the driver in the center of authority. One particular commercialized implementation of ADAS is the lateral vehicular safety systems such as lane departure prevention (LDP), lane keeping assistance system (LKAS) and blind spot intervention (BSI). The human-in-the-loop nature of these systems makes the design problem non-trivial and challenging since the influence of automation on the driver should be considered in terms of human factors thoroughly. There is a vast of human factor studies investigating the conflicts arising in human-machine systems and one approach has received considerable attention in academic research to fulfill the desired design guidelines. Haptic shared control concept is build on the idea of two systems (e.g., human operator and automation) acting together on the manual control interface and performing the same task cooperatively. This framework aims to provide a bi-directional information flow between both systems while increasing the efficiency and reducing the workload of human operator. One of the most popular implementation in automotive research is the haptic guidance system which shares the steering control in order to support driver in lane keeping/changing and obstacle avoidance maneuvers. These systems communicate with the driver through feedback forces and so the demanding visual workload of the driver is relieved by utilizing the under-used haptic sensory channel. The various studies show that these systems are effective under routine driving tasks when the goals of both systems meet but there is still some topics which should be investigated in order to analyze the effectiveness of these systems during emergency maneuvers and/or conflict situations. This thesis investigates the open issues in the literature of shared steering control problem by proposing an assistance system design based on the model predictive control (MPC) approach. MPC is a model-based optimal control routine which employs receding horizon technique. In this approach, an optimal input sequence is calculated by minimizing a cost function which depends on the future prediction of state trajectories that are calculated by using a mathematical model of the plant. This constrained optimal control problem is solved at every time step for a finite time horizon. Only the first input of the optimal sequence is applied to the plant and the optimization routine is solved at next time step. The design of the predictive controller could be separated into four elements: A prediction model, a user-defined objective function, the constraints and tuning of the associated weights and prediction horizon. We emphasis the trade-off between the control performance and the complexity of the optimization problem with respect to the prediction model that is used. Using a relatively simple but yet accurate model could decrease the complexity while not deteriorating the control performance. In this thesis, we design and implement a driver steering assistance system (DSAS) which utilizes the torque-based steering actuator (i.e., a torque overlay is superimposed instead of angular position) of the vehicle in order to generate a torque guidance for safe and assisted automated driving. Most of the previous studies design the guidance forces through the combination of a preview controller, which calculates the optimal steering angle, and a proportional feedback loop. The tuning of these forces are heuristic and it may lead to conflicts and increase in physical workload even in routine driving tasks. The studies show the affects of neuromuscular system (NMS) properties of the driver's arms while interacting with the guidance forces. The adaptability of these properties is a challenging issue in designing such systems. In order to over come these issues, we consider the NMS properties of the driver's arms coupled with the steering system and we propose a novel driver-in-the-loop steering model whose parameters are identified online by using a recursive least squares (RLS) scheme. This allows the controller to adapt the dynamic changes in the human-machine system and update the parameters of the prediction model in order to optimize a more suitable guidance force. We also design the objective function such that there is a trade-off between amount of utilized guidance forces and amount of deviation from the optimal trajectory. If the driver's and system's goals are matched (i.e., no conflict), the controller utilizes a suitable amount of guidance with respect to NMS properties. However when the goals do not match (i.e., conflict) as the controller increases the guidance torque and the driver opposes it by increasing the impedance, the controller decreases the guidance torque gradually since the input cost dominates the tracking cost in the objective function. On the other hand, if the driver's actions are most likely to cause a safety issue the system intervenes at all cost whether the driver accepts or opposes. We first test the proposed assistance system through closed-loop simulations in lane departure and blind spot intervention scenarios. The results show that when the NMS properties are known correctly in the prediction model, the control performance increases with minimum intrusion and control effort. Next, the system is validated in a test vehicle which is instrumented with a production level electric power assisted steering (EPAS) system which is called motor driven power steering (MDPS) system. We performed the experiments with human drivers in lane departure scenarios. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed system in adapting with respect to driver's response. The haptic guidance is generated according to how the driver interacts with the system's activity. A better control performance is achieved by updating the prediction model in the controller. We also conducted an experimental study with five participants to validate the performance. The results show that the assistance system adapts the guidance torque systematically with respect to the interaction level. This approach could resolve conflicts between the driver and the controller during routine driving tasks when there exists disparity in control objectives.

Multi agent intersection management considering energy consumption

Traffic congestion is one of the main reasons of increasing pollution and fuel consumption in the cities. According to recent urban mobility reports, traffic congestions cost up to $121 billion in USA every year due to productivity and time loss. Approximately 38-40 hours are spent by an average citizen in the traffic. Additionally, 25 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide is emitted due to congestions. Increasing number of vehicles on the urban roads leads congestions at the intersections. Traditional intersection management methods such as stop signs, traffic officer control and traffic lights, are getting insufficient. Traffic light timing depending on day time is a common application; however, it is not an adaptive method for changing traffic flow density. Traffic density can be measured by cameras, piezo and infrared sensors. Intelligent traffic light timing can be achieved using the traffic information gathered from the units integrated to the roads. Vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication technologies allow us to gather information directly from vehicles, and analyze traffic congestion. Besides, vehicles can be informed about the traffic ahead or can be conditioned to reduce effect of congestions. Intersections can be managed by using information from the vehicles. One way to manage intersections is to integration of an intersection manager unit. Vehicles request reservation from intersection manager to pass the intersection. Another approach is interactive multi agent intersection management by the help of autonomous vehicles. Autonomous intersection management uses estimated trajectories provided by the vehicles to detect any possible crash at the intersection. Estimated position of a vehicle at a time can easily be simulated for a given velocity profile. Estimated position and time information of vehicles are compared and estimated collisions are detected. Possible collisions must be resolved before the vehicles arrive at the intersection. Most common approach is the first come – first served method, which allows the first vehicle that requests reservation first to pass the intersection, allocate the intersection. Other vehicles' trajectories must be adjusted to avoid the collision at the intersection. This adjustment is done by assigning delay to the arrival time of the vehicles at the intersection. Giving the priority to the vehicle that requests reservation first may not always be the most efficient decision in terms of total delay time. A method called look ahead intersection control policy is explained in the next sections. Look ahead intersection management policy assigns the priorities based on total delay time minimization. This method aims to reduce consecutive effect when the head vehicle of a convoy is delayed. In this study, we proposed an intersection management method searching the passing sequence from the collision point to minimize defined cost functions. First intersection model is explained to specify communication zone, velocity adjustment zone and grid structure at the center of intersection. Communication protocols are given for the communication zone. Crash detection and intersection management algorithm are executed in communication zone by all vehicles. Vehicles' estimated trajectories are transformed into time – space occupation at the intersection using grids to easily isolate possible collisions. Passing sequences of the vehicle, which are estimated to pass the collision point, are found. For each sequence, different vehicles' arrival are delayed by different amount of time. Therefore, each sequence results in different total delay time. Selection between possible passing sequences is done by minimizing total delay time. Another performance criterion is energy loss of the vehicle. Vehicle longitudinal dynamics are explained for energy loss calculation. Delay time is realized by deceleration and acceleration. Acceleration requires an increase in traction force, this leads energy loss compared to the nominal state. Since vehicle dynamics are different for different vehicles, the same velocity rate may result in different energy losses. Hence, each passing sequence has a different energy loss value associated with it. This difference is used to select the sequence with minimum energy loss. Energy loss and total delay based costs are then combined in one cost function using a rating parameter. After specifying cost functions, intersection management is simulated for different cases. A simulation framework is created in MATLAB. Vehicle kinematic bicycle model, which is used in the simulation environment, is explained. Vehicles with different masses and paths are simulated in different case studies. The case studies show that total delay based sequence selection distributes minimum delays to the vehicles only aiming to resolve estimated crashes. On the other hand, energy loss based method gives the priority to heavier vehicles to minimize energy loss. Thus, the total delay time increases in energy loss based method. The combined cost based selection method reduces energy loss of the total delay time based method. Similarly, it reduces total delay time of the energy loss based method. In this thesis, literature survey and motivation of the study is given. Then vehicle models are explained for further use in the thesis. The intersection model including communication protocols and crash detection are stated. Afterwards, the intersection management algorithm is explained. The total delay time, energy loss and combined cost functions are given. Finally, simulation environment is explained and results of case studies are discussed.

Raibert'in kontrolörü üç aşamadan oluşmaktadır.
