Abstract (EN)

The science of Qur'anic exegesis (tafsīr) is regarded as one of the noblest and most esteemed of the Islamic sciences, for through it the meanings of the Words of Allah the Exalted are understood, and from it His rulings and guidance are derived. Scholars have devoted exceptional care to this discipline, authoring distinguished works and adopting diverse methodological approaches, including tafsīr based on transmitted reports (al-tafsīr bi-lmaʾthūr), tafsīr based on reasoned opinion (al-tafsīr bi-l-raʾy), and allusive or symbolic tafsīr (al-tafsīr al-ishārī), which seeks to uncover inner meanings inferred from the Qur'anic text without compromising its apparent sense. Within this context, Rūḥ al-Bayān by Imām Ismāʿīl Ḥaqqī al-Bursawī (d. 1127 AH) emerged as one of the Qur'anic commentaries that received widespread attention among scholars and students of knowledge. This prominence is due to its depth of meaning, precision of expression, and its distinctive integration of transmitted exegesis with Sufi allusive interpretation in an elegant style. Al-Bursawī relied extensively on Prophetic traditions in his commentary, which necessitates a critical examination and verification of these narrations to ensure a sound understanding of the intended meanings and guidance of the Qur'anic verses. Accordingly, this study undertakes an analytical and critical examination of Rūḥ al-Bayān, with a particular focus on the verification and documentation (takhrīj) of the Prophetic traditions cited in the commentaries on Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and Sūrat al-Baqarah, based on authoritative ḥadīth sources. The study also aims to elucidate the defining features of al-Bursawī's exegetical methodology, especially his approach to employing Prophetic traditions in interpreting Qur'anic verses, while highlighting the influence of the Sufi method on his interpretive directions and inner allusions. The research adopts an inductive-analytical methodology. It systematically collects the Prophetic traditions cited in al-Bursawī's commentary on these two sūrahs, traces them back to their original sources, and evaluates them accordingly. Furthermore, it analyzes al-Bursawī's exegetical style, assessing the extent of his adherence to the principles of transmitted exegesis and his handling of allusive and Sufi interpretations without transgressing the apparent meanings of the Qur'anic text. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the critical verification of exegetical and ḥadīth heritage and in highlighting the scholarly value of Rūḥ al-Bayān within the Islamic intellectual tradition. It also offers an academic contribution that helps clarify certain exegetical concepts and provides guidance for researchers and students of knowledge toward a rigorous and sound methodological approach in dealing with Prophetic traditions within the context of Qur'anic interpretation. In conclusion, we ask Allah the Exalted to accept this work with gracious acceptance and to make it sincerely for His noble Countenance alone. Indeed, He is All-Hearing, EverResponsive. May Allah's blessings, peace, and grace be upon our master Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.
