Abstract (EN)

Uzbekistan has gotten over various political stages in the past century and experienced hard times in terms of religious education. Uzbekistan, which started the twentieth century under the occupation of Tsarist Russia, spent most of this century under the heavy ideological pressure of the subsequent Soviet period. As a consequence of the loosening albeit a bit of the Soviets' tight and uncompromising pressure from the 1940s onwards, has emerged the informal religious education system called "hücre", and started a new era in Uzbekistan's educational history. This education model, which has grown gradually in the following years, has comprised a huge number of students and enabled them to receive religious education. The pressure on religious education has not come to an end in Uzbekistan, which gained its political independence - at least on paper - with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In this master's thesis study, religious education in Uzbekistan over the last century has been examined in various dimensions. The study was enriched by conducting interviews with educators and scholars, who were witnesses of the period, as well as the existing publishing source. This study, which referenced the chronological historical method, benefited also from the descriptive and analytical methods.
