Synthesis of some merocyani?ne dyes from 1,3-di?methylbarbituric acid and investigation of their spectroscopic properties

In this study, a range of merocyanine dyes has been synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation of 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid with some aromatic carbocyclic and heterocyclic aldehydes. The structure of compounds was confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR and UV-VIS spectra . The effecct of substituent and heterorings on absorption spektra of the dyes were investigated . In addition, absorption spektra of the dyes were recorded in various solvents. Ingeneral, the dyes prepared from electron donating substituted carbocyclic aldehydes showed a positive solvatochromism.
