Turkish foreign policy in 1. national front government (31 March 1975 - 21 June 1977)

I. National Front Government (NFG) (1975-77) was founded in a period when Turkey was struggling in domestic and foreign problems. In this period, Turkish Foreign Policy had to face with several international conflicts. Cyprus conflict was the most important subject. After Cyprus Peace Operations in 1974, northern part of Cyprus was dominated by Turks and the island divided into de facto practically which lead the conflict to a new stage. I. NFG which was founded in March1975, defended ?two region federation? thesis. Government chose the method of consultation to be accepted internationally. During the period of I. NFG, in consequence of USA?s arm embargo on Turkey, Turkish-American relations were extremely strained and fragile. Turkey applied sanctions to USA like taking control of military bases in order to withdraw the embargo. That withdrawal remained as the only condition of the government for reconstructing the relations. Turkey-European Economic Community (EEC) relations were in a problematic period while 1.NFG was demanding to EEC a revision of Turkey?s role which had been worsened by the years. During the direction of 1.NFG Turkey-Soviets relations became closer as a result of conflicts between Turkey and USA ? EEC. At this period, Soviets began to common investments in Turkey. Relations between two countries were mostly based on economical and commercial benefits.
