Investigation of the loneliness, guilt and shame levels of 12-14 years old divorced and undivorced family children

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of loneliness, guilt and shame among divorced family children and non-divorced family children. Descriptive research model was used in the study. To collect the research data, "Personal Information Form", "UCLA Loneliness Scale" and "Continuous Guilt and Shame Scale" were used. The population of the study consisted of secondary schools in Malatya. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 425 students including 249 non-divorced family children and 176 divorced family children attending 6, 7 and 8 grades in 11 secondary schools affiliated to Malatya Provincial Directorate of National Education in 2018-2019 academic years. The data obtained in the study were entered into statistical package program SPSS 20.0 and the data were analyzed. Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the difference between loneliness score, guilt score and shame scores of divorced family children according to gender. Kruskall-Wallis test was used to determine the difference between the loneliness score, guilt score and shame scores of the divorced family children according to the number of siblings. Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the difference between divorced family children's loneliness score, guilt score and shame scores according to gender. Kruskall-Wallis Test was used to determine the difference between the number of siblings of divorced family children, the frequency of seeing the parent, the other parent, and the loneliness score, guilt score and shame scores according to the age when the parents divorced. Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the difference between divorced family children and non-divorced family children. Correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the loneliness scale, guilt scale and shame scale. In statistical analysis, the level of significance was determined as 0.05. As a result of the study, a statistically significant difference was found between divorced family children and unmarried children. The loneliness scores of divorced family children were statistically higher than the loneliness scores of divorced family children. There was no statistically significant difference between the guilt and shame scores of divorced family children and non-divorced family children. A statistically significant difference was found between divorced and un divorced children according to gender, loneliness, guilt and shame scores. The loneliness, guilt and shame scores of girls were found to be higher than the mean of loneliness, guilt and shame scores of boys. No statistically significant difference was found between the scores of loneliness, guilt and embarrassment according to the number of siblings of divorced family children and non-divorced children. A statistically significant difference was found between the loneliness scores of the divorced family children. The loneliness rank average of the children living with his father was statistically higher than the loneliness rank average of the children living with his mother. The loneliness rank average of children living in orphanages was found to be statistically higher than the loneliness rank average of children living with their mothers. No statistically significant difference was found between loneliness, guilt and embarrassment scores of divorced family children and non-divorced family children according to the frequency of seeing other parents. No statistically significant difference was found between divorced family children and non-divorced family children's loneliness, guilt and embarrassment scores according to the age at which their parents divorced.
