The role of Devrim journal during 12 March military intervention

Devrim, published between the years 1969 and 1971, was one of the most important periodicals in the history of Turkish political thoughts. This journal has not yet been studied in depth. The researches made about Devrim generally concentrated on Yön Movement or Doğan Avcıoğlu and mentioned Devrim briefly. All these works successfully showed the continuity relationship between Yön and Devrim. However this study departs from this viewpoint. This thesis is built around the study of the journal Devrim purely and attempt to understand the political importance of the Devrim in Turkish politics and the Turkish left before the 12 March military intervention. Moreover list of whole Devrim authors, their writing frequency and index of Devrim are given in appendix. Devrim?s thesis developed around Kemalism, anti-imperialism and independency. The authors of Devrim evaluated that the establishment of multi-party system after World War II and the Democratic Party Government were significant breaks which had long-lasting effects. Furthermore they interpreted the fifties ?the counterrevolution years?. Therefore Devrim gave a special importance the progressive military intervention such as the coup of 27 May 1960 which ousted the Democratic Party Government. According to Devrim, the coup of army as a necessary step to save the reforms of Kemalist regime and also for economic, social, political development of Turkey. To sum up, Devrim had an important role both in Turkish politics and 12 March era.
