Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, the descriptions about the architectural works of Bursa in the books of the travellers who visited the city from the 14th century to the year 1923 have been evaluated. In order to determine that the descriptions are reliable, first the structural reviews of the travel books have been made and current issues have been defined. In the continuation of the thesis, all the information given about the architectural works in Bursa and its districts before and during the Ottoman Period has been evaluated. Some information unknown about the buildings has been tried to be enlightened through these sources. Especially in the example of the city centre of Bursa, depictions of the damages on the buildings caused by disasters like earthquakes, fire, or war have been given parallel to those of the travellers. It is noticed that opinions of the travellers about the attitudes of both Ottoman rulers and Ottoman population towards the relics have been widely found in their travel books and these opinions take place in a separate chapter in this thesis. Although some of these opinions are shaped by the prejudices of the travellers, they still help to reach important results which point out the negligence and corruption in the 19th century. The visuals like gravures and drawings in the travel books mentioned in this thesis have also been evaluated in a separate chapter.
