Abstract (EN)
Surre in the dictionary means "a purse in which valuable items such as gold and money are placed". As a term, the word surre refers to the money, gold and other items sent to be distributed to the people of Mekka and Medina every year before the pilgrimage. These two cities, which have great importance in the religion of Islam, have always been considered important by Islamic states. However, it was given a special importance by the sultans of the Ottoman Empire. For this reason, various gifts and money were sent to Mekka and Medina, which are the favorites of Islam, in a special ceremony by everyone, regardless of class, whether rich or poor, prominent or commoner. Before the Ottoman Empire, other Islamic states also started the tradition of sending surre to Haramain and tried to continue this tradition. However, the Ottoman Empire made this tradition permanent with great care and established it in a certain system. Surre was first sent in the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid. Later, during the reigns of Mehmed I and Murad II, this tradition was continued and became continuous and systematic with the annexation of the Hejaz to the territory of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Selim I. Thus, surrahs continued with special ceremonies with the participation of state officials and continued until the collapse of the state. In this study, the surrahs sent to Mekka by the Ottoman Empire in 1171 Hijri/1757-1758 Gregorian and the books in which the records of the surre were kept were discussed. With the information obtained from these transcripted notebooks, various inferences were made about the social and economic conditions of that Mekka of the period.
