Abstract (EN)
In the scope of this thesis, some information were give about thermal power plants and air pollution, especially sulfur dioxide pollution, caused by 18 Mart Çan Thermal Power Plant were evaluated. One of the most important air pollutants, originating from thermal power plants is sulfur dioxide and its main source is use of lignite with high sulfur content. Lignite around Çan has also high sulfur content and for the utilization of this source 18 Mart Çan Thermal Power Plant was built. In order to determine the sulfur dioxide concentrations caused by 18 Mart Çan Thermal Power Plant, ISC ? ST3 dispersion model was used. The model was ran with different parameters to determine adverse conditions. It was seen that parameters like stack height, building way of stack, topography of the region, wind velocity, gas temperature have important effects on sulfur dioxide concentrations determined by model.Meanwhile when the wind velocity was 4,1 m/s, sulfur dioxide concentrations calculated in Durali, Yayaköy and Kulfaköy were 68 µg/m³, 96 µg/m³ and 84 µg/m³, respectively. Çan, largest settlement around the thermal power plant, is affected when the wind blows from the west. Other wind directions haven?t any adverse effect in Çan. Prevailing wind in the region is northern winds and therefore should be some other emission sources which causes air pollution in Çan.Keywords: Thermal power plant, sulfur dioxide, air pollution, lignite
