Socio-economic and demographic structure of Yörükan communities in balya district according to temettuat and population regi̇sters dated 1840 (H.1256)

Temettuat registers are of great importance in terms of revealing the socio-economic structure of the settlements in the Ottoman Empire during the Tanzimat Period. It is possible to obtain a lot of information from the books, such as the demographics of the place concerned, the occupational structure, agricultural and livestock activities, annual income and taxes paid. In this study,aiming to reveal the socio-economic and demographic structure of the Yorukan Communities of the Balya District in 1840, the population register number 1206 in the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and the Temettuat of the Yorukan Communities with the numbers 7233, 7237 and 7240 in the series of the Ministry of Finance Temettuat Books His notebooks became the main source. In addition, research and analysis works were used. In the first part of the study, which consists of three parts, information about the history, general characteristics and life of the Yoruks are given. In the second part, according to the Population and Temettuat Registers, the typological characteristics and population structures of the Yorukan Communities were examined in line with the statistical data obtained about the name, father's name, nicknames and titles, if any, physical characteristics and ages of the men living in the household with the head of the household and their social and demographic characteristics were revealed. In the third part, the economic structure of the Yorukan Communities has been evaluated by considering the total wealth and income, as well as the field, vineyard acres, olive cultivation and animal husbandry registered to the households in the Temettuat Registers. Thus, it has been tried to reveal that the Temettuat Registers constitute a rich source for social and economic history research. The study was carried out to contribute to the history of Balya District and the Yoruks living in the region.
