The view of Turkish and Turkiye in 19th century Spain: 1807-1833

This thesis analyses Turkish people and Turkiye news in Spanish newspapers and magazines between 1807-1833. These years, which coincide with the reign of Mahmud II, are a period of many events and beginnings that differ from the previous years and are important for the following years. Ottoman State mentality and tendencies changed, shells were broken, and reform and innovation movements increased in the military, social and cultural fields, in these years. The 19th century was a time of revolution and invasion for Spain. Spain, which was politically and economically weakened due to the wars experienced, was struggling for independence against the invasions of England and France on the one hand, and on the other hand, it was faced with many social problems due to the conflicts of liberals and absolutists in the internal structure. In this period, the number of newspapers used by the public as a weapon against the war and propaganda against the occupation increased considerably. People formed public opinion by publishing newspapers in line with their own political ideas and delivering the news to the readers. In this process, news about Turkish people and Turkiye in Spanish newspapers and magazines increased considerably. In this thesis, the flow of information from the Ottoman Empire to Spain in the years 1807-1833 is analysed through the news about Turkey and Turkiye in Spanish newspapers and magazines. Accordingly, it was observed that the Spanish press closely followed and published news about Turkish and Turkiye in the collections of the newspaper and magazine archive of the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports. A total of 891 news items were translated and these news items were used for two purposes in the thesis. First, to determine the quality of news flow; second, to determine the information about Turkiye and Turkish people reflected in Spain. In this direction, firstly, the news items were classified according to their subjects and a data set was created, and the information about the news flow was transformed into tables, graphs, and maps.
