Non-muslim schools and Missionary activities in Tokat at the end of the 19th century

In this study, non-Muslim schools in Tokat Sanjak at the end of the 19th century and the missionary activities carried out in these schools were examined. The missionaries, who accelerated their work in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, carried out an intense activity by increasing the number of the schools they opened, the associations they founded, and various institutions and organizations. In this context, one of the places where the Missionaries operate is Tokat and its region. The fields of activity of the missionaries in and around Tokat are on education and health. In the monthly and annual reports of the missionaries working in Tokat, social life, the functioning of the schools, the number of students and lessons are mentioned. The student population of the detached schools opened by the missionaries consists of Armenian and Greek children from different sects living in Tokat and its surroundings. In addition to religious and positive sciences, quality language education draws attention in schools. Missionaries, who also attach importance to pre-school education, opened vocational courses for young girls and women, and added sports and artistic studies to their education programs. With these activities, a positive attitude was developed by the non-Muslim people against the missionaries. In this way, the missionaries, who gained the sympathy of the non-Muslim people, influenced the people in social, cultural, political and religious aspects.
