Abstract (EN)

Fashion has many connections with art. From the 19th century, when the modern fashion system appeared, to today, fashion designers were classified as artists by some critics. By separating themselves from other craftsmen and tailors, a section of fashion designers claimed that they made art. In this study, the interaction between art and fashion is interrogated through a historical reading. The period from the middle of 19th century, when an institutional modern fashion system and modern art movements appeared, to World War II is considered as the modern period of fashion and art. The interaction between fashion and art in this period is investigated under the titles of direct and indirect interactions. Under the title of direct interactions, the interaction between fashion and cubism, surrealism, futurism and constructivism are examined. Under the title of indirect interactions, fashion designers? presentation of themselves as artists is discussed. The period from Second World War II to today is considered as the postmodern period. In this period, new art practices such as performance art, installation, video-art appeared in art sphere. In fashion sphere, styles became varied and phenomenon of avant-garde and postmodern fashion emerged. At the same time, it became difficult to separate high culture from popular culture, and art object from commodities. In this study, interaction between fashion and art in postmodern period is discussed in the context of fashion presentation, the urban context of fashion, and consumption of fashion. The transforming process of fashion show from a toll of promotion and advertising to performance art is clarified by examples. Afterwards, how Antwerp?s transformation into a fashion city and the rise of Belgium fashion are examined in the context of `artification?. Lastly, phenomenon of big fashion firms? art galleries like retail stores, and their international art project organizations and support to these projects are investigated. In this study, the question of ?Is fashion art?? is always considered, but instead of giving an answer to this question, both of these two spheres are interpreted in a wider perspective, i.e. visual culture; and whole analyses and evaluations are made in this context.
