19th Century Italian tomb sculptures

The history of the European tomb sculpture and the Italian tomb sculpture that had most important evolution throughout the nineteen century, are studied in this thesis.Altough there had been a tradition about erected tomb sculptures on the tombs that in the interior of churches, they were limited that made for moguls as saints, arictocrats, and reverends. Making private statues to the cemeteries were began with isolating the burial grounds from the living areas and building modern cemeteries. The tomb sculptures which were erected to the cemeteries in the outside of the town walls, should be thought not only decorative objects but also as a guardian of the souls and as a sign the social status of the families, psychological and cultural significance of the tomb sculptures on behalf of society is also emerging.In the first chapter of thesis, which is consisted of two main chapters, ?European Tomb Sculpture?, the evolution of the modern tomb sculpture and its traditional structure are studied with regarding the factors that caused the formation of the private tomb sculpture. The 19th century Italian tomb sculpture which has an important part in the hisory of the European tomb sculpture, is also examined by giving out reference sculptures and the sculptors of Neoclasism, Realism and Symbolism which create the 19th century Italian tomb sculpture.The second chapter, ?The Structure Elements of The 19th Century Italian Tomb Sculpture?, consists analysis about elements of the Italian tomb sculpture, by explaining the iconographic and symbolic elements of the European tomb sculpture.
