Political, social and economic status of Malatya in 1923-1950

Since the first years of the Republic, the "One Party System" administration, which wanted to get rid of the devastating results of the First World War and the War of Independence, tried to create plans and programs according to the potentials of the cities in the economic field and tried to achieve growth. The city of Malatya is one of the cities that benefited from this growth in the best way. Factors such as the fact that the city acts as a bridge connecting Eastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia, having fertile lands and İsmet İnönü being from Malatya have been its biggest advantage. Malatya, which remained behind compared to the surrounding cities, which could not even be a state during the Ottoman period, made progress in almost every field after gaining the status of a province with the republic. The governors, who are the administrators of the city, were chosen from important names. During one of Atatürk's visits, İsmet Pasha said, "I saw Pasha's hometown. It was a pretty big village," he said. İsmet Pasha replied, "If you wish, this village will become a city with your protection and order." Indeed, Malatya has managed to become one of the cities that uses its resources most effectively. It is seen that the Republic made great strides in its first 27 years. The republican administration was able to see the gaps between east and west closely in order to move up the cities that remained behind in development. The fact that the city of Malatya was occupied and survived the effects of the war with less damage has enabled it to have significant incomes in agriculture, animal husbandry and partly industry. This thesis aimed to reveal how the local structures, which use energy and human resources effectively, that try to take great lessons from the past and look to the future with confidence, developed with the support of important statesmen. It also aimed to reveal aspects of the city, the apple of the eye of the republic and the east, which were not known even to the citizens of the city.
