An investigation of the place occupied by the institutions that trained Turkish language and literature teachers between the years 1923-1950 in Turkish educational history

The study aims at evaluating the institutions that trained Turkish Language Teachers and Literature Teachers within the period from the declaration of the Turkish Republic until 1950 in various aspects, and determining their places in Turkish Educational History.A screening model was employed in the study. In order to obtain information relevant to the study, a literature review was carried out, and the data that helped answer the research objectives were evaluated. Archives of Gazi Institute of Education, Archives of Istanbul University, the Archive of the Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Archive of Turkish Educational Publications Department, State Archives of the Prime Ministry, Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, The National Library and university libraries provided the relevant data for the study, all of which thereafter were compared with each other, analyzed and evaluated.The population of the study comprises Teachers? High Schools, Institutes of Education, and Faculties of Literature that trained Turkish Language and Literature teachers between the years 1923 and 1950. There existed three Institutes of Education that trained in-field-teachers between the years 1923 and 1950: Gazi Institute of Education (Ankara), Çapa Institute of Education (İstanbul), Necatibey Institute of Education (Balıkesir). Those three institutes adopted the programs and regulations of Gazi Institute of Education; and they did not have separate Turkish Language and/or Literature departments from the time they were founded till 1950. Therefore, this study investigates Gazi Institute of Education. The study also covers İstanbul Teachers? High School, a corporation of İstanbul University and the Ministry of National Education, which trained Literature teachers in the years between 1923 and1950. The study also deals with İstanbul University and Ankara University, two important educational institutions that served for the training of teachers.The aim, significance and limitations of the study and hypotheses, researches regarding the subject and definitions were presented in the introduction chapter of the dissertation.Within in the conceptual framework, after giving a general overview of the teacher training system in Turkey, teacher training systems of Ottoman and Republic periods were evaluated.In the findings and interpretations chapter, Teachers? High School, Gazi Institute of Education, İstanbul University and Ankara University which served as institutions training Turkish and Literature Teachers between 1923 and 1950 were evaluated in terms of historical developments, structures and processes, programmes, the education they provided, instructors, student registration and acceptance requirements, requirements for passing a course and graduation and their graduates and the teachers they trained.In the results chapter, after evaluating the institutions, their place and importance in the History of Turkish Education were pointed out and a variety of recommendations regarding the subject were made.
