1929 world economic crisis and its reflections on Turkish press

Capitalism is a kind of concept which is involving economy, society and history. However, the system has emerged with 1848 revolution and since than it has undergone tremors with periodic crises. The period of the 1929 crisis is the largest and most devastating crisis seen in the history of capitalism with its reputation for area of coverage and socio-economic consequences. The economic crisis that started on October 24, 1929 with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange in the USA has been effective in all world economies and has been creating great troubles in the Turkish economy since the beginning of the year. The Government of Turkey which already inherited a devastated economy from Ottoman Empire has been shaken economically one more time by the crisis in 1929. The ideas based on the liberal economic policies in the era of foundation of the Republic were left their place to the practice of statism with the 1929 crisis. Turkey has applied to statist policies and entered into effort of creating the domestic industry during the crisis in 1929. In this process, the state has taken various steps to get rid of the crisis with minimum harm. These measures were taken by the Republic of Turkey affected the overall economy of the country. In this direction, the crisis has become a subject for newspapers, magazines and books of the era. In this research, we tried to examine how the 1929 crisis was reflected to the Turkish press and how the crisis was perceived in society. In this study, we tried to reach the general view of 1929 crisis period through pres. The newspapers, magazines and books of the era of 1929 crisis has been scanned to find out the reflections of such a historical event. This study has searched primarily Turkish and The World economies with comparison of pre-crisis and post crisis periods and then analysed its reflections on newspapers, ideological magazines and books.
