The effects of the 1929 economic crisis on İzmir

1929 economic crisis influnced the world begining America. Turkey also was effected by this crisis. In order to cope with the depression various ways were experienced. One of the most important things was to be a self-sufficient country by exporting instead of importing. Turkey was able to overcome the depression with balanced finance policy and compatible with the state control approaches. Turkey made a lot of financial arrangements, established Central Bank and tried to set into action interior dynamics by gathering industry and agriculture congresses. The public was motivated to use local goods and was also continually informed about the economic crisis.Izmir has been one of the most important trade cities from Anatolia to the west during history. Europe export was made on the port of Izmir. That?s why the stability of the world market was reflected Izmir. The prices had been falling down and productions couldn?t be sold. Both central and local management wanted heavy taxes to balance the budget and answer the needs. Additionally, foreign companies were benefitted from this situation of this public since the time of Ottoman Empire. They didn?t help some of the people if they weren?t bound to them in terms of economics.After long-term wars the immigrants who immigrated various places in Anatolia (but first Izmir) caused plenty of problems. Unemployment was increasing day by day. People who lived in Izmir were complaining about high prices. 914 kuruş were enough for an average family in 1924 but they needed 125 TL 23 kuruş in 1932. They had important problems in the field of education and health. Just after the declaration of Republic some revolutions and increase in price made the people excited against regime. This condition was right for this.
