Protest attitude in American printmaking after 1940

The aim of this dissertation named as `Protest Attitude in American Printmaking after 1940? is to determine the protest reflections of social events on prints of the time in the historical development of print from the onset up to now.In the first part of the study, the progressions of printmaking before and after the industrial revolution throughout the world and protest examples were examined. All the difficulties and pursuits since the periods of world wars were studied in a universal dimension in the scale of the United States of America, which became one of the most important centers of art as a result of economic power and brain drain and where a number of people from different ethnic groups and cultures lived altogether especially after 1940, which was considered to be the renaissance of printmaking. In this sense, Federal Art Project, where a great number of artists made prints collaboratively and freely by governmental assistance without ignoring the propaganda aim as well as Atelier 17, which Stanley William Hayter established in New York and which has the characteristics of an experimental center were examined in terms of their contributions to printmaking and the artists? innovative and protest works.The development of socio-economical and cultural process throughout the world and in America was studied. In addition, differences put forward by political and economic balances that changed after the World War II on the social structure of societies and their worldviews were examined in the second part.Also In the second part, protest examples of the use of knowledge and thought by multiplying and sharing, the application of printmaking, which has democratic characteristics, on nearly all kinds of materials and surfaces with the help of technology and its use in public areas were scrutinized. Findings related to these parts have shown that art has been in all areas of the daily life especially by the help of printmaking and thus it has a great role in increasing cultural expansion and richness and transmission of social messages which can shape and stand artists? periods to large crowds.
