Alienation in Turkey and Italy in the 1960s: a comparison of the films of Time to Love and The Eclipse

Alienation is a concept that still has many areas of study even today. Studies on this concept have gained momentum with the emergence of modernization and have been intensively discussed within the framework of cause and effect. Considering the social potential of works of art, it is seen that they form an explanatory ground for such concepts. Especially in the 1960s, when cinema movements aimed at reflecting the society were popular, daily life was the subject of movies a lot. The movies The Eclipse and Time of Love, which were made during these years, are two of these examples. These two films, one made in Italy and the other in Turkey, deal with the relationship dynamics of the society they are in and examine them. In this study, the alienation experienced in Turkey and Italy in the 1960s is emphasized, starting from the dates when these two films were made. For this reason, first of all, alienation studies were examined and the situation of the analyzes brought to this concept was described. Then, the historical framework of the 1960s was examined and the situation of the individual in the social context was clarified. In the last part of the study, the films Time to Love and The Eclipse (L'Eclisse) were analyzed on the basis of the themes determined in the axis of theoretical studies. As a result of this analysis, the details of the individual's struggle for social integrity in the 1960s were revealed. It is seen that the 1960s are experiencing the problems of alienation in the dimensions reflected by the selected movies, revealing that social isolation in the individual sense is on the rise.
