The theme of migration and the use of everyday objects in Turkish art after 1960

The theme of migration is not only a social issue that has always maintained its importance in our age, but also a multilayered, interdisciplinary theme. Migration significantly impacts individuals from beginning to end, culturally, geographically, and socially. Migration is defined as the movement or relocation of individuals or groups from one country to another, from one settlement to another, for economic, social, and political reasons. The theme of migration emerges when identities move from one place to another, alienating them from their roots. The concept of belonging, which is also linked to the place of residence of identities, and the relationality formed by the everyday objects carried during migration constitute the first part of the research. The second part contains definitions. The third part, with exemplary works by reference artists, examines the everyday objects displaced by migration. The fourth part, which includes personal works created within the context of migration, features works produced with an autoethnographic approach. Migration-themed works allow the artist to reinterpret the past by relying on photographic indicators. Thus, both personal memories and collective memory become more understandable. By visualizing the effects of migration, artists also keep collective memory alive. Research has been conducted on migration-themed works in Turkish painting after 1960, assessing how historical, social, and cultural memory became artistic indicators during migration. Migration-themed works are discussed chronologically, focusing on the changes, differences, and similarities between Turkish artists and their migration-themed works from 1960 to the present. Everyday objects carried during migration are analyzed within an artistic context.
