1973-1979 foreign policy of Afghanistan

The 1973-1979 period has seen a lot of changes in Afghanistan's foreign policy. During that period the republic regime replaced monarchy. The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan embraced the policy of improving relations with the Western Bloc in order to free itself of the dependence on the USSR. Therefore Afghanistan was in the pursuit of improving ties with the world. Muhammad Daud Han, who played a leading role in the abolition of Afghanistan's monarchy and who later became the first president of the emerged Republic, was trying to save Afghanistan from dependence on the Soviet Union and redirect foreign policy. That is why Daud Han was making an effort to improve relations with the West and its Western-oriented neighbors. The cooling of Afghanistan-Soviet Union relations led to the coup which in turn led to the change in political regime. During this 5-year period Afghanistan experienced a deep crisis with 4 coups, followed by the Soviet invasion. But we cannot claim that before the Soviet Union's direct invasion these four coups happened without indirect Soviet Union's influence.
