A study only the vocabulary of fictional text written in the field of children's literature between 1985-2005

A STUDY ONLY THE VOCABULARY OF F CT ONAL TEXTWR TTEN IN THE FIELD OF CHILDREN?S LITERATURE BETWEEN1985-2005ABSTRACTThis study was done in order to find out the word property of children?s literature suchas; novel, story, fairy tale, epic and legendary stories and to explore the results by comparingthem with the vocabulary of elementary school graders.Children?s books have been chosen among the books that Instruction Council havesuggested for last 20 years, the books that had prizes and the books that have been publishedfor a long time in the field of child literature.100.000 words have been selected for 200 epics each taken from 100 child novels, 100child stories, 100 fairy tales, 54 child epics and 14 child legendary books, and a narrative textpool that consisted of total 500.000 words has been constituted. Every kind of children?sliterature, vocabulary, reduplications, idioms and proverbs have been evaluated according totheir usages.In the section of vocabulary of children?s books, total and different word counts,names and the words between 0-2000 frequency interval have been evaluated separately; andthe words in each frequency group have been analyzed together with the percentages atdifferent and total word lists. Words, reduplications and idioms in children?s literature havebeen combined and the elements of word properties of each genre have been listed togethercomparatively.However, children?s literature from every genre and their word pools have beencompared with the vocabulary lists of elementary school graders in 3 different ways.Key Words: Children?s literature, Children?s books, word property, vocabulary.
