Synthesis and characterization of 2-(4-chloro-1-naphthyloxy)-2-oxoethyl methacrylate with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate copolymers

Abstract (EN)

In this study, 2-(4-Chloro-1-naphthyloxy)-2-oxoethyl methacrylate ((ClNOEMA) monomer was synthesized from 4-Chlor-1-naphthol, methacryloyl chloride and sodiummethacrylate in acetonitrile solvent at 70 oC in the presence of triethylbenzylammonium chloraid as phase transfer mater. The structure of monomer(ClNOEMA) was characterized by, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques. Copolymers having various ClNOEMA with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) contents were prepared. Monomer reactivity ratios; rClNOEMA and rDMAEMA were calculated both Finemann-Ross (F-R) and Kalen-Tüdös (K-T) methods, and with the computer program RREVM. The glass transition temperature of copolymers was investigated by DSC and also its thermal stabilities was studied by TGA. The molecular weights of the copolymers were obtained by GPC measurements. The antimicrobial activities of polymers and copolymers were tested against different bacteria and fungi. The quaternerization salts of poly(ClNOEMA-co-DMAEMA) were prepared with methyiodide. It is observed that as the amount of CINOEMA increased in the composition of copolymer the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability of the samples increased. The ratios of monomer reactivity of the copolymer system were found as rClNOEMA = 0.1537 and rDMAEMA =2.9598. This showed that the copolymer chain is reach in DMAEMA. As the amount of CINOEMA increased in the copolymer composition, the effects of copolymers against the bacterias and yeasts increased. It is observed that higher amount of DMAEMA, increased temperature and the longer period of quaternerization resulted in the higher value of conductivity.Keywords: 2-(4-Chloro-1-naphthyloxy)-2-oxoethyl methacrylate, Copolymerization, Monomer Reactivity Ratios, Thermal Properties, Antimicrobial Activity, Quaternerization, Conductivity
