The search for individual memory in 20th century Western art and its contribution to art education

In the 20th century, a new perception of time was reviewed, with the returns of rapidly increasing scientific, technological and political transformations. The rapid increase in scientific developments, the inability to catch up with time and the yearning, triggered the interest in memory and nostalgia cases. These enhancements and changes in the global balance have stimulated the hiding and keeping impulses and the new perception of time has differentiated the forms and functions of these actions. One of the main features of art is that it has been a means of expression that humanity has been able to transfer its existence, history, cultural values and experiences to the future since ancient times. As a form of recording and storage, art has an important place for individual, social and cultural memory. Rapid changes that deeply affected the history of humanity in the 20th century caused new ideas and formations in art. In the research, firstly, the concepts of memory are emphasized and the views of the thinkers and the transformations in the history of thought have been examined. In the 20th century, when two great world wars took place, researches were made on the culture and art environment of the Western world. The research focuses on artistic works that reflect the personal life stories of the artists, who see the traces left in the memory as an inspiration store. In the works unearthed in this context, the works of artists, where they live the cultural traces of the society they live in and rebuild their personal experiences and memories, are analyzed. For many artists; The images created by memories such as childhood memories, traumas and cultural pressure are inspirational. In the frame of research, although the artists' works are classified as the product of their individual memory, it has been observed that a clear judgment cannot be made between memory types. In the last part, the relationship between art education and memory theme is examined and defined with theoretical views. The contribution of the technique known as memory education method to art education has been investigated. During the art education, the differences in the manner caused by the improvement in memory performance were examined.
