The development of 21st century clarinet performance techniques starting with the search for new instrumental timbres in the 20th century

Due to its large family, the clarinet has a colorful repertoire that includes works composed in many different musical genres. The formation of this repertoire in classical music began in the Baroque period and expanded, specialized and enriched with the development of the instrument. This development and enrichment is also valid for the playing techniques of the instrument. This study examines the search for new timbres, which intensified and enriched especially in the period after the instrument settled, in its historical process, and includes observations about the point it has reached in the 21st century. In the first section, the process of the instrument until the 20th century is examined. While making this study, the history of the instrument is briefly explained in order to better understand the possibilities of the instrument at that time; Examples of works written for the instrument's possibilities at that time are given. In the second section, the developments in the expression of 20th and 21st century music are briefly mentioned, and examples of these developments in the clarinet solo and chamber music repertoire are given. In the third section, there is information on the new playing techniques that can be seen in the works of the 20th century and today's compositions. In general, the study aims to create resources for researchers who are interested in the historical process of the clarinet repertoire and the contemporary concepts of calrine music.
