Özet (EN)

In this thesis, Çankırı in a period covering the Ottoman Empire's last quarter century and first quarter century of Republic of Turkey is discussed. Constitutional monarchy and the Republic. Although it looks different in terms of government, there is no major change in administrative and political terms. The paradigm of both periods is based on modernization. The goal is to reach the level of Western civilization. Public works, education, political system, daily life become meaningful with the symbols of empire and nation state forms. Their appearance in the process from the beginning of the twentieth century to the half of the century will show how much influence modernization can find in Çankırı. Cinema and theater can be given as examples in this context. The fact that they were not in practice pre-republic means that there has been a noticeable difference in terms of cultural practices after the republic. Except for providing manpower for the long war, the pre-republic era meant stagnation for Çankırı, a poor city of the time. The view during this vivid but short period is among the subjects of this research. Sources used for this research include means of oral history, archive and non-archive records, and products of public works. Keywords: Çankırı, City, Modernization
