Popular image insight in 20th century painting

With the start of 20th century, growing numbers within societies have emerged to contribute the political, social and economic dimensions of modern life as democratisation and industrialisation have broaden their influence. Moreover, the extent of social and cultural changes throughout the 20th century have gradually exhibited their inevitable influence on almost all forms of arts especially on painting. Especially within the second part of the century with the rise of popular culture accompanying the increasing mass media coverage, consumerism, societys' openness to political manipulation, industrialisation, social issues associated with emerging urbanisation and unfulfilling and mechanised labour relationships have soon reflected their influences on the conception of the artistic imagery and especially on modern painting. This study aims to analyze the inevitable changes caused by the emergence of Pop Culture on modern painting and it aims to examine the underlying reasons how the images of painting has been transformed through the effects of social, intellectual and cultural movements in 20th century. In order to achieve its objectives, this study evaluates the social and cultural environment that has been led to mass/pop transformation in the society and it examines the journey in which image has been transformed into various forms in terms of significant art movements such as Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Dadaism, Pop Art, New Dadaism, Video Art and Digital Art. The significance of this research causes mainly from the rarity of researches that analyzes the position of image within a period of time in the art history, especially addressing the past century.
